Klein looked straight at her, raising an eyebrow. “Am I single?”

He gave a short, mocking laugh, then his face quickly returned to its usual calm. “I don’t have a girlfriend. Does this have anything to do with the terms you’re about to bring up?” he asked.
Whitney’s fingers twisted the sheets, bunching them up. She was silent for a long moment before finally speaking in a low voice, “Yeah, it has.”
Klein watched her, unhurried, not pressuring her at all. His voice even softened a little. “Go ahead. It’s fine. Whatever you ask, I’ll agree. I promised you that.”
Whitney wondered if she was imagining it, but his words sounded almost encouraging.
Whitney met his eyes, swallowing nervously. “Um, I was wondering… do you need a girlfriend? I need someone to help me handle my family for a while. Would you be my boyfriend for three months?”
Whitney wasn’t some clueless kid anymore.”
The way Klein had been looking out for her lately went far beyond simple courtesy.
And she had called off the wedding, after all.
With Carter and Emily in the picture, she knew she ought to stay far away from Klein.
But if he was actually interested, Whitney was ready to go all in.
Klein’s eyes were as dark and silent as the sea before a storm.
“I don’t need a girlfriend,” he said, lips curling into a faint smile. “But I am missing a wife. Want the job?” he asked.
Whitney felt like she’d just been blown to pieces. ‘Does he even know what he’s saying?‘ she thought, her brain short–circuited.
“It’s fine,” Klein said, his voice steady. “You’re still dealing with your family situation, so there’s no rush to answer. Once you’re my wife, none of this will fall on you anymore.
“As Mrs. Harris, my name alone will be enough to shut down anyone who gives you trouble. So, do you want the job?”
Whitney felt like she’d been hit with a freeze spell, just standing there, totally shell–shocked.
Klein gave a low, amused laugh. “What, did I blow your mind or something?”
She shook her head like crazy. “No, just… still wrapping my head around it.”
‘Honestly, anyone would be left speechless by that,‘ she thought.
Whitney really did want to ride his coattails. Three months was just enough time for her to take care of
those troublemakers.

But she never thought he’d actually ask her to marry him.
Whitney muttered, “James would never go for this.”

Klein raised an eyebrow. “Whether he agrees or not is my problem to handle. My wife doesn’t need to worry about any of that.”
He was so confident that it bordered on arrogance.
That was Klein, the only man who could carry himself with that kind of unshakable confidence.
Whitney bit her lip. “I need to think about it.”
She looked up at him. “Is this a contract marriage?”
She wasn’t ready for this, and with Patricia having just passed away, she felt she should stay in mourning for at least a year.
Klein’s response totally caught Whitney off guard.
“Whitney Moore,” he said, calling her by her full name, “in my world, divorce isn’t even an option.”
Whitney’s heart sank. ‘So he wasn’t going to accept a contract marriage after all, she thought.
“I need to think it over,” Whitney said.
‘Marriage isn’t a joke. I’m not about to play games with it, Whitney thought to herself.
The curve of Klein’s lips deepened. “Take your time. No rush. You’ve got all the time you need.”

After Whitney finished her IV drip, she didn’t let Klein drive her home.
Seeing how insistent she was, Klein just let her go.
‘Marriage is a huge deal. She needs time to think it over, he thought.
After saying goodbye to him, Whitney took a cab straight to the auction house.
By this hour, the auction house had already cleared out.
Whitney presented her attorney ID card and asked to speak to the building manager. Once she explained the situation and signed the request form, she was taken to the security office to review the hallway footage from that time.
Everything went smoothly. After reviewing the surveillance footage, Whitney headed straight to the police station to file a report, holding her hospital records.
Whitney always made sure she came out on top.
With the case number slip in hand, she headed back to her apartment, feeling steadier than before.
It was only then that she noticed the bracelet on her wrist.

‘Wait, isn’t this the bracelet I wanted to buy for Grandma at the auction?‘ she thought.
But Klein was the one who won the bid.
And he was the one who put it on her wrist.
‘Why would he do that?‘ Whitney wondered.
Everything Klein was doing for her lately was just so good.
It was so perfect that she almost couldn’t believe it was real.

Three days later, Laura was getting really worked up.
“Samuel, Whitney’s gone crazy. I just wanted her to meet my nephew the other day, and now she’s trying to accuse him of sexual harassment,” Laura ranted.
“My family owns a company too. Even if she’s not into him, she can’t just go around making false accusations,” she complained.
Samuel was furious. “Is she crazy? She actually went to the cops? She doesn’t have any proof. The police won’t even pay attention to her.”
Laura stomped her foot. “Don’t forget that she’s a lawyer. She could spin anything.”
Samuel tried to calm her down. “Alright, I get it. She’ll be back in a few days. I’ll talk to her then.”
*****
Whitney was back to work at Prime Bridge Law Firm after her break.
Frank saw she’d lost weight and asked, concerned, “Whitney, you alright? The Harris Group’s acquisition case is paused until next week. Why not take a few more days off and rest up?”
Whitney gave a wry smile. “I’ve already been gone a week. I can’t leave everything hanging forever.”
She had a lot on her plate. She couldn’t just keep moping around.
Ivan called her and Frank into his office. “Whitney, you doing alright? How’s your headspace?”
Whitney replied, “I’m good. I’m ready to go.”
“Great. You and Frank are heading to NextSphere Electronics this afternoon for due diligence,” Ivan said.
Whitney and Frank replied in unison, “Got it.”
NextSphere Electronics was a family–run business that had been in the electronics game for ten years, and now things had finally reached the point where a full due diligence review was on the table.
Their office politics were a tangled mess, so due diligence here was anything but easy.

For instance, the head of finance was actually the CEO’s uncle.
As soon as Whitney walked in, the man made it clear he wasn’t planning to play nice.
