The meeting lasted for two hours, and by the time it concluded, the workday was nearly over.
Calvin deliberately held Ivan back, and the two of them headed to his office to discuss things further.
Whitney stayed behind in the conference room to organize the key points from the meeting.
She was so focused on her notes that she didn’t notice everyone else had cleared out, leaving only Klein, who was taking his sweet time gathering his things.
He tapped his fingers on the table. “So our weekend date is still on, right?”
Klein’s smooth voice cut through the silence, startling her.
Whitney’s head snapped up, and she quickly scanned the room. They really were alone now. Still, she kept her voice low and cautious. “Mr. Harris, we’re going furniture shopping this weekend. It’s not a date.”
Klein raised an eyebrow. “What was that? I didn’t quite catch it.”
Whitney didn’t want to argue with him, and she was terrified someone might walk in and overhear them. That would be impossible to explain. “Nothing. See you this weekend.”
She hurriedly stuffed her notebook into her bag and practically bolted out of the conference room.
Klein stood there with one hand in his pocket, a faint smile playing on his lips. ‘She’s so easily spooked, he thought.
Whitney walked quickly down the hallway, typing out a message to Ivan as she went.
Whitney: [Boss, I’ll wait for you in the parking garage.]
She hit send and immediately bumped into someone. Whitney looked up, and her eyes went wide. It was George.
George looked just as surprised. “Whitney? Did you come to the company to see me?”
Whuney quickly shook her head. “No, George. I’m here on business.”
George’s assistant, Nolan Lewis, had met Whitney before, and he remembered her well enough. After all, she’d nearly Married Carter
George frowned slightly. “Business?”
Mr. Harris Ms Moore is here for the company’s latest acquisition case.” Nolan said gently. Calvin mentioned we’re working with PrimeBridge Law Firm
George’s expression cleared Tsee”
He let out a light laugh Whitney, if you need anything in the future, you can contact my assistant I have a meeting to get
to so I head out now
Whitney kept a faint smile on her face the entire tine, but the warmth never reached her eyes
She wasn’t about to take his polite words seriously. If he’d really meant u. he would ve told her to contact him directly

Whitney understood perfectly. The moment she’d called off her engagement to Carter, she lost the privilege of being

treated warmly by the Harris family elders.
Especially since she’d chosen to break off the engagement on the wedding day itself.
That hadn’t just been a slap in Carter’s face, but in George’s as well.
The fact that he could still manage surface–level politeness was generous enough.

George returned to his office, and his expression turned cold. “Did Calvin personally choose the law firm?”
Nolar nodded. “Yes, he did.”
Calvin works for Klein, George thought. ‘Does he know about Whitney’s past engagement to Carter?‘
When you get a chance, feel free to probe Calvin a bit,” George said. “If that’s the case, you can give him a hint.”
The implication was clear. George didn’t want Calvin getting the wrong idea that Whitney still had any connection to the Harris family.
She a chosen not to marry Carter, so she had no right to enjoy the privileges that came with being part of the Harris family.
Nolan understood immediately. “Yes, sir.”
Calvin didn’t send Ivan away until he saw Klein return to his office. ‘Man, the things I do for this guy, he thought. Covering for Klein like this was hard work. I should really put in a request with HR to bump up my year–end bonus.‘
But instead of hearing about a bonus, he got a visit from someone close to George.
Calvin said. “Nolan, what brings you here?”
Nolan smiled. “Nothing major. I just wanted to check if you’re still using the conference room this afternoon. Mr. George Harris needs it.”
The company had conference rooms on multiple floors, not just the twenty–second, so Calvin found the question pointless. Every day, the administrative department sent out the conference room schedule in advance.
Calvin thought. Was Nolan blind or something?‘
Calvin smiled, “Well, no, we don’t need it. Mr. Klein Harris won’t be using it, so Mr. George Harris can have it.
When dealing with George’s people, Calvin always used full formal titles
Klein might be younger than George, but he owned the entire corporation, and Calvin needed to keep the names straight to avoid confusion
Notan nodded knowingly Good By the way Calvin is the legal team you hired for the new acquisition from Prune Bridge Law Firm 1 dunk I just saw a familiar face
Calvin paused ‘Yeah that’s right Is there a problem!”
Nolan replied. “No problem You might not know this, but theres an Ms. Moore at PruneBridge Law Firm who’s Mr. Carter Harris ex–girlfriend
“I thought maybe she was here to see our Mr. George Harris. You know how it is- Mr. Carter Harris is getting married soon

and it’s better if ex–girlfriends stay away.”

Calvin froze. He thought, Wait, what? Is Nolan talking about George’s son? And Ms. Moore–is that Whitney? So Mr. Klein Harris is interested in his own nephew’s ex–girlfriend?‘
Nolan caught the shock on Calvin’s face and knew his hint had landed.
He smiled with satisfaction, “Well, Calvin, I’ll let you get back to work. Mr. Harris needs me, so I should head back.”
Calvin was still processing when Klein suddenly appeared in the doorway of his office.
Oh god, now that I know this secret, is he going to silence me?‘ he thought.
Klein raised an eyebrow. “What are you spacing out about, Calvin?”
Nothing, Mr. Harris. I’m fine,” Calvin said quickly, snapping back to attention.
Good. From now on, notify me about every meeting with PrimeBridge Law Firm, big or small. Understood?”
Calvin’s expression turned complicated. “Understood.”
Oh. Į understand perfectly,‘ he thought. ‘Are we about to witness an uncle–versus–nephew showdown?‘
Calvin felt both terrified and a little excited.
van spotted Whitney standing next to his car in the parking lot.
He walked over and waved her in. “Get in.”
Once they were both settled in the car, Ivan turned to Whitney with a puzzled expression. “What do you think Mr. Harris neant by what he said in the meeting?”
Whitney asked, “Huh? What part?”
The whole thing about not working overtime. I literally just told you we’d probably need to put in extra hours, and then he pors and says that in the meeting. If I didn’t know better, I’d think he had cameras in the office or something.”
Whitney’s lips twitched, and she let out an awkward laugh. “I know, right? So weird.”
Talk about timing, she thought
Of course, Ivan would never suspect that Whitney had anything to do with it
There was no way he could imagine that Whitney had any connection to Klem, the most powerful man in the business world
“Well, whatever No overtime means no overtime Mi Harris is something else Guess they re not in that much of a rush with the merger after all Ivan shrugged “We’ll just focus on huishing the Harris Group project during regular hours, and everything else can wail”
Whitney forced another simile Sounds good. Boss”
If Boss knew that Klein made that rule just so I’d have time to go furniture shopping with him
