Returning so dejectedly, April had no choice but to start unpacking with the help of her maid, removing the dust covers from the furniture and putting away the contents of several large suitcases.
As April was busy tidying up, Vincent rushed in.
Seeing him, April felt as if she'd found her anchor. She threw herself into his arms, her eyes welling up.
"What exactly happened?" Vincent asked, concerned.
April shook her head, her eyes filled with worry as tears streamed down. "They stopped me at the border. They didn't give me a specific reason, just that I can't leave the country for now. Vincent, I have a terrible feeling. I feel like something bad is about to happen."
Vincent's expression grew incredibly grim as he listened.
April had already resigned from the police academy, and all her paperwork for going abroad had been processed according to procedure. There were no issues.
If the problem wasn't with April, then it was likely with him.
After years in the political arena, Vincent hadn't lost his edge. He was now certain that the higher-ups were on to him and had probably already started a covert investigation.
"April, I think they're watching me," Vincent said in a low, heavy voice.
"Then what do we do?" April panicked. She gripped Vincent's hand tightly, tears of desperation falling. "Vincent, let's leave now, get out of the country. If we can't get through customs, we can be smuggled out..."
"Don't be afraid, April, don't be afraid. It hasn't gotten that serious yet," Vincent said, holding her and comforting her in a gentle voice.
Vincent was far more patient with his mistress, April, than he was with his wife, Mrs. Walker.
"They probably started investigating a while ago, but since no news has leaked out, they likely haven't found any critical evidence. Colin Gonzalez, George, and Oscar are all dead. As long as I keep a low profile, they shouldn't be able to find anything. Once the heat dies down, I'll figure out a way to send you and our son abroad."
Vincent stayed with April and the baby all night, only preparing to leave at dawn.
"Yolanda's in the hospital. I have to go back and check on her so she and her mother don't get the wrong idea," Vincent explained to April.
"Yolanda's hospitalized? Is it serious?" April asked with concern.
Of course, April wasn't genuinely concerned about Yolanda, but she had to put on a show for Vincent to prove what a virtuous partner she was.
"It's the same old problem. You don't need to worry about it. Just take care of yourself and our son." Vincent's gaze on her suddenly became serious. "You must manage those assets I gave you very carefully. If something happens to me, that's what you and our son will have to rely on."
Vincent and Mrs. Walker had been married for years, but what man doesn't have a secret stash of money? What Mrs. Walker had managed to find was just the tip of the iceberg.
