Sorry Too Late (by J.J. Twelve) novel Chapter 119

Evan soon

anyway.

In truth, countless people in government circles would’ve killed for an invitation through that door. Anyone personally welcomed into Sean’s home was being shown the highest level of respect.

A poised, capable-looking woman opened the door-clearly the mayor’s wife.

Evan was just about to greet her when she suddenly grabbed his hand, eyes lighting up with excitement. “Evan my darling son-in-law, you’re finally here! Come in, come in-the food’s almost ready. Have a seat first!”

She ushered him inside warmly, as if welcoming a long-lost family member.

Evan stood frozen. ‘Evan? Darling son-in-law? Isn’t this our first meeting? What on earth is going on?’ He quickly looked toward Sean.

‘Ahem!’

Sean began coughing violently, trying to signal his wife to rein it in. But she didn’t notice at all. After pouring Evan a glass of water, she sat right beside him, smiling as she studied him.

“Nice, nice… my future grandkid is definitely going to be adorable…”

The more she looked at Evan’s handsome features, the brighter her smile became. She kept thinking of him as her son-in-law and was already dreaming about future grandchildren.

“Come here!” Sean quickly pulled her aside and hissed, “Didn’t I tell you to watch how you present yourself? Who starts shouting ‘son-in-law’ the moment they meet someone?”

Belinda Joplin finally snapped out of her excitement. “I just couldn’t help it I got too happy seeing Evan! It slipped out-I didn’t even realize…”

Even though this was her first time meeting him, she’d been hearing his name nonstop these past few days. It already felt like she knew him.

Then she added, as if making a formal announcement, “Sean, I’m telling you right now-I’ve decided. He’s the one. No one else will do. I even prepared a gift!”

Belinda pulled out a thick, fancy envelope stuffed with cash-easily tens of thousands.

Sean’s eyes nearly popped out. “Where did you get that kind of money…”

Because of his sensitive position, finances were no trivial matter for him.

Belinda huffed. “Relax. I saved this myself-pinched every penny. I was planning to give it to Estelle as part of her dowry, but giving it to her future husband is the same thing!”

“Evan, dear, I didn’t prepare much for our first meeting, so take this…” Before he could react, she stuffed it into his hands.

Startled, Evan immediately tried to hand it back. “Ma’am, what are you doing? I really can’t take this.”

“Don’t refuse. I like you. Just take it!”

Evan hadn’t expected Belinda-slim as she was-to be so strong. She shoved the envelope into his hands with surprising force.

Sean could only manage an awkward explanation. “She’s just… enthusiastic. Please don’t take it the wrong way.’

Evan looked down at the envelope with a bewildered expression. ‘Enthusiastic? This is beyond enthusiastic. Who treats a first meeting like this-and even hands over cash…’

He had lived with the Solberg family for three years, and Stefan and Cynthia had treated him very well-but not even they had gone this far.

Soon, the food was ready. Belinda brought them out, steaming hot.

“Where’s Estelle? Still sleeping? Go wake her up. We’re eating!”

Evan stared at the stairs, dazed. ‘So their daughter is home…’
