Chapter 14, Breaking Point

While Evan ran off, surprised by the news, Hazel and the others, on their way to the Solberg Residence, were shrouded in a heavy, tense silence.
Everyone was trying to guess what had happened at Hazel’s home.
What could have set Stefan off like that?
Hazel’s brows knitted tightly. The uncertainty gnawed at her the most.
Her father sounded especially angry with her. Was it her fault the family had fallen into chaos? But she hadn’t done anything recently, had she?
“Hazel, do you think it could be because of Evan?” Just when everyone was at a loss, Anya spoke up.
The idea made sense.
First, Evan had stormed off to the Solberg Residence in a huff. He’d almost certainly gone there to tattle on Hazel to her parents.
Second, Stefan and Cynthia had always favored Evan. As long as he didn’t cross any serious lines, they would side with him
every time.
That was why Hazel had kept her relationship with Zeke a secret. She knew her parents probably suspected, but they had chosen not to confront it. In matters that could disturb the family’s peace, they turned a blind eye.
Even if Evan caused a scene, they would pretend not to know and soothe him instead.
But this time, Hazel had gone too far. She had hurt Evan, and now there was a very real chance he had ripped through the fragile barrier keeping everything hidden.
“We’ll see when we get home.” Hazel’s voice was cold, her expression icy. Right now, in her mind, Evan was nothing more than
a tattler-a coward.
She opined, ‘Hmph. Evan, if you think dragging my parents into this gives you power over me, you’re seriously underestimating
me!’
She could let many things slide, but anything involving Zeke was off-limits. She would never back down.
Soon, they arrived at the Solberg Residence.
“Dad, where’s Evan?” Hazel asked the moment she stepped inside.
Stefan and Cynthia opened their mouths, then froze mid-word because they saw Zeke standing behind her.
That girl had actually brought that Carter guy into their house.
“Mr. and Mrs. Solberg, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I didn’t prepare much, but please accept this small gift” Zeke even greeted them politely, handing over a token of respect.
Veins bulged on Stefan’s forehead as he gritted his teeth, wishing he could slap the boy right off the spot
Cynthia pressed a hand firmly against Stefan, whispering over and over, “Don’t get angry This is to protect Evan ”
“Dad, where’s Evan? Why don’t I see him?” Hazel asked again
Roxanne and Anya scanned the place, hoping to spot him.
“He went out,” Stefan said at last, holding back, his face a mix of resignation and frustration
