Chapter 162 A Misread Debt
Hugo already knew Evan’s true background. It was precisely with that knowledge that he understood that Cain had no way of touching Evan or him.
“How odd. How is Evan able to make Mr. Wells apologize to me? Things just don’t add up…”
Back at the Golden Residence, Graham and the three heiresses were still struggling to understand how Evan was the reason Hugo had come.
Even Hazel, Roxanne, and Anya, who proclaimed to know Evan best, couldn’t figure it out. Was Evan secretly someone important? Yet, not even Darius, who was practically at his peak right now, could ever make someone at Hugo’s level bow like that.
If anyone in Silverton State had that kind of influence, it would only be Cain Solomon.
“Bad news!”
Just then, a shocking announcement arrived from the state capital. It seemed that Cain was preparing to personally intervene in the drakeblood gemstone case.
The moment the news dropped, Hazel, Roxanne, Anya, and Graham all felt a jolt run through them. Their
minds reeled.
‘Cain is getting involved himself?!’
“I get it! It’s because of Mr. Solomon! That’s why Mr. Wells came apologizing!” Hazel blurted.
‘No wonder Mr. Wells rushed over to sever ties! So that’s it!’
Roxanne’s expression shifted dramatically. “I get it now! Mr. Wells was telling the truth-Evan was the reason he came to apologize!”
Hazel grew more animated. “The evidence for the drakeblood gemstone swap is solid. Mr. Solomon is about to step in against Evan. Mr. Wells definitely caught wind of it early. He didn’t want to be tied to Evan in any way, so he took three slaps just to cut himself loose!”
Everything clicked for everyone upon hearing Hazel’s explanation. Shock rippled through the room.
Graham slapped his forehead. “Now I understand why he kept stressing Evan’s name. So that’s why!”
Anya frowned. “But Mr. Wells doesn’t have a direct connection to Evan. The slaps were between Mr. Wells and my father…”
Hazel shook her head. “You’re forgetting why Mr. Wells slapped your father three times in the first place. He did it because he was acting as Evan’s guarantor. That’s the key. A guarantor shares responsibility for the drakeblood gemstone being swapped…”
She was fully convinced she had unraveled the truth.

Anya and Roxanne stared in disbelief. They couldn’t help marveling at Hugo’s foresight. To protect himself completely, he would go that far just to remove the tiniest connection to Evan. Nevertheless, it also made one thing clear-Cain’s next move was going to shake the entire state.
“Can we save Evan?” Roxanne asked quietly on the way back.
Even someone like Hugo, who barely had any real involvement with Evan, had scrambled to sever ties. What about them? Their history with Evan ran far deeper. If Cain passed judgment, the entire Leighton family could be dragged down with it.
Roxanne hadn’t hesitated three years ago. She had stolen her family’s life-saving drug without blinking. Compared to that, Cain’s threat meant nothing. Still, she regretted her actions immensely upon Zeke’s
return.
Plus, she had just been welcomed back into the Leighton family. If her grandfather found out about this, she would never hear the end of it.
“Don’t worry, Roxanne. He’s staying at my parents’ right now…” Hazel tried to reassure her, but her tone shifted a beat later. “Whether we protect him or not will depend entirely on his attitude.”
The implication was clear. Evan had to cooperate, or they would cut him loose, too. Zeke’s life still depended on Evan’s blood. So, they needed Evan alive. However, there was no way they’d risk everything for him if he refused to help and only cared about saving his own skin.
“He doesn’t have much time left…” A cold glint flashed through Hazel’s eyes.
The three of them returned to the Nine Courts to check on Zeke, only to spot a familiar figure from afar.
“Evan!”
