Everyone turned their attention to Hugo. Their breaths quickened at the sight of him. That was especially so when it came to the
three heiresses.
Hugo paused mid-step, gave Graham a long, profound glance before saying, “I wasn’t planning to say it. But since you asked, I’ll tell you. It’s because of Evan Norwood.”
The name drop hit like a thunderclap. Graham, Hazel, Anya- every last one of them felt as if they had been struck numb inside and out.
‘Evan. It was because of Evan? That can’t be right!’
Every person present trembled violently. Cold sweat poured off them as if someone had damped a bucket af ice water over their
heads.
“That can’t be right, Mr. Wells. Are you sure you didn’t make a mistake?” Anya forced herself to ask.
Every member of the Golden family nodded frantically. Something had to be wrong-there was no way Evan had the pull to make Hugo apologize.
Sure, Evan had said more than once that he would make Hugo be slapped to repay the Golden family’s kindness. However, no one had ever believed he could actually make it happen.
Hazel and Roxanne both clutched their heads, stunned beyond belief. The whole thing felt unreal.
“He’d be a big shot if he could make you apologize,” Graham suggested, convinced it was impossible.
“Do you really think I’d joke around with my own reputation?”
Hugo’s sudden retort dropped the entire place into silence.
He was right after all, who would make such a joke that would squash their dignity into nothing? Besides, this was Hugo Wells they were talking about.
He was a man who guarded his pride like his life. Would he really show up just to get slapped over a joke?
Absolutely not.
“Believe what you want, but it really was because of Evan. I’ve repaid the Golden family on his behalf. So, all of this nonsense has nothing to do with me now. Ah, that’s right. If any of you dare to spread what happened today…”. A faint murderous chill seeped off Hugo.
Graham shrank back. “U-Understood…”
୮
He knew Hugo hadn’t shown up because he was afraid of him. It was obvious something else had forced his hand. The only thing no one could wrap their heads around was that the person behind it was Evan…
The entire Golden family, along with Hazel, Roxanne, and Anya, remained frozen in shock. None of them wanted to believe that the person who had made Hugo apologize and be slapped was truly Evan.
Still, Evan had indeed kept his word and paid back the Golden family’s kindness because Hugo had allowed Graham to hit him repeatedly right in front of all of them.
It was unbelievable.
“Sir, I’ve already let Graham slap me repeatedly. You no longer owe the Golden family anything,” Hugo reported the moment he
left Golden Residence.

“Mm. Good work.” Evan was pleased with the outcome. The breath tre had been holding for years finally eased out of him.
They were just slaps, but they marked the end of a long-standing debt. These days, nothing was harder to repay than a favor. It only became more grueling when Anya brought it up every chance she got.
At long last, his ledger was paid.
“If you ask me, the Golden, Solberg, and Leighton families are idiots to force you into this situation. Wouldn’t it have been better if those three girls had just stayed by your side?” Hugo scoffed.
In his eyes, the Golden family was so desperate to protect their pride that they blew everything out of proportion. Now, look where they were. Now, Evan had repaid the favor and was no longer tied to them.
“It’s a shame you weren’t there,” he added. “If you’d seen their faces. Gosh, their eyes almost rolled out of their damned heads when I said I came because of you.TM*
Hugo rambled on, causing Evan to shoot him a look. “I’m settling a debt, and you’re over here being a prancing horse?”
Hugo looked delighted despite having had his face slapped. It only proved how much he valued being useful to Evan, as he knew that working for someone like Evan meant unlimited opportunities.
Although the shadow of Cain Solomon still loomed over Silverton, Hugo no longer feared it now.
