Chapter 172 The Last Meal That Wasn’t

After hearing James’ explanation, the triplets looked at Darius with even greater surprise.

They had only thought about shielding the Norwood family from backlash. They hadn’t considered the possibility of currying, favor with Cain, let alone the idea of preventing unforeseen complications.

Darius didn’t say a word. He simply smiled shyly, looking harmless as ever.

The triplets looked at him with admiration, even respect. Darius, you’re incredible. You thought of everything.”

Soon after, Evan arrived. His presence hit the room like a storm-sharp, forceful, impossible to ignore. Anyone who met his eyes felt an odd pressure, a faint sting behind their gaze.

Even though he had severed ties with the Norwoods long ago, stepping back onto this land and facing the people he had once mistaken for family still stirred old memories.

He remembered every cold look from three years ago, those eyes that had stared at him the way one might look at a stray dog on

the street. Most of all, he remembered those so-called closest kin.

Evan’s gaze lifted and fell on the six people standing in the main hall. After three years, his parents looked younger and even more energetic. His three older sisters appeared even more elegant and stunning, their nearly identical beautiful faces frosted over with disdain they didn’t bother to hide. Darius still looked harmless, smiling at him as if nothing in the world could break his peace.

‘What a lovely family. They truly looked like they belonged together.’

“James,” Evan said calmly, “what made you suddenly remember you still had a ‘son’ after three years?”

The room stiffened, believing their earlier speculations family card. But with that attitude?

“You bastard, who do you think you’re talking to-“James bristled, but Josephine quickly grabbed his arm. “Don’t forget why we brought him here.”

Then she turned to Evan with a warm smile. “Evan, I know you’re angry. But we had no choice at the time. If you hadn’t taken the blame, Darius would have died. You wouldn’t have wanted our family to come to an end, would you?”

The meaning was clear. He wasn’t blood. Keeping him would have meant risking the Norwood lineage.

“And didn’t things work out for you? You ended up becoming the Solberg family’s adopted son. It’s all in the past now. We just want the whole family to sit down and enjoy a peaceful meal together tonight.

She even reached to tug him closer like nothing had changed. Like he still belonged.

“This isn’t the infamous ‘last supper’, is it?” Evan blurted.

A ripple of tension shot through the room. “Of course not,” someone said quickly. “It’s just an ordinary dinner.”

It wasn’t time to admit anything yet.

Once they were seated, everyone waited for Evan to bring up the real issue himself. That was the only way this dinner would be entertaining. But no matter how long they waited, Evan never mentioned it. In fact, he behaved as if he had truly come here just to eat-digging in ravenously.

James and the others stared in disbelief, then their shock turned to tury.

“Stop eating! Have you been starving for a month?” James roared, flinging a spoon in front of Evan.

Evan paused, expression darkening slightly. “You invited me for dinner,” he said evenly. “Now I’m not allowed to eat?”

“Can you even stomach it? It’s your last meal anyway.” Alice cut in couldly, her tone sharp.

Evan picked up at once, thinking, So it really is the last supper, huh? What, inviting me here just to humiliate me?

He noticed then that Darius, James, and all three sisters were looking at him with a mix of disdain and pity-as if he were already a dead man.

“Who said this is my last meal?” His voice dropped, cold enough to freeze the air.
