Chapter 185 Denial
Chapter 185 Denial

They couldn’t believe Darius did it, not when all the evidence pointed to Evan as the culprit. The cameras couldn’t stop flashing, taking photos of the Norwoods. The family looked like they wanted to scream.
Darius stood rigid, like he’d been struck by lightning. He hadn’t expected this-certainly not Evan dragging reporters here and naming him in public.
Gabriel’s gaze turned lethal. The Norwoods visibly wavered.
James growled, “That’s slander, you little bastard! Darius stole the gemstone? No! The evidence points to you! He turned to Gabriel. “Don’t listen to him, Mr. Gabriel! He’s panicking! He’s trying to take us down!”
“My husband’s right! He’s trying to frame us!” Josephine roared at Evan with disgust, “You shameless thing! We’re your parents! How dare you do this to us? After all the years we wasted on you, we should’ve known you were nothing but a beast!”
Evan couldn’t care less about the Norwoods’ insults. The moment they twisted the story and made him take the fall, they were no longer family.
“Tell Mr. Gabriel and the reporters that you stole the gemstone, Evan! Tell them the truth, if you have an ounce of conscience left! Prove that you’re more than we thought you were!”
“Do you really think you can turn this on Darius, just because you said so!”
“Yeah! We’re not idiots!”
The triplets jumped in, voices sharp and contemptuous. Behind them, Darius shrank back like a frightened chick, hiding behind their shoulders. “I didn’t do it! He’s lying! You have to trust me!”
“Of course we do, Darius. We’ll protect you!” The triplets quickly soothed Darius down.
Evan laughed. He used to be the triplets’ most valuable person, and he repaid them with kindness. Now what he saw nearly made him throw up.
The moment Darius was found, they took back all the affection they had for him and gave it all to a person they’d
never met.
He couldn’t help wondering, ‘Is blood really that decisive?’
Evan’s look was not missed. The sisters turned to him coldly. “Honestly, we stopped seeing you as our brother once we found out you weren’t related to us. We were going to kick you out that very night, but Dad stopped us.”
“That’s right.” James’s smile sharpened into something ugly. “I always keep an exit strategy-just in case.” He spread his hands as if it were clever. “And that ‘just in case’ came.”
Everyone else was perplexed, but Evan got it. His eyes gleamed with something icy.
Of course.
James kept him around to take the fall for his family if that day came. Then the gemstone case happened. He became that scapegoat.
James noticed the emotions that were stirring inside Evan, and he guffawed. “I confess, your little struggle surprised me, but you think you can take my family down alone? Absurd! You have no proof! These reporters will be writing about your crimes instead!” James raised his voice.
By then, the rest of the Norwoods had recovered from their initial shock. Their fear curdled into arrogance again.
