If Roxanne had taken the time and given it a bit more thought, she’d have noticed her family’s strange behavior. She’d have realized that there were barely any people in the house and that there were no eyes on her.
They claimed to be working on the wedding, but Thaddeus sent them away on purpose in order to give Roxanne an opening. After all, she wouldn’t have attempted to steal the drug if there were people around.
Another round of searching, another round of failure. “Odd. It’s still nowhere to be found. Maybe it’s not even here. Did Grandpa lie to me?”
Suddenly, she heard footsteps echoing from the outside. Thaddeus and his group had returned from the control room and ran into Roxanne, who was just done searching for the drug. That nearly made Roxanne jump out of her skin. She thought her heart would stop right there.
Thaddeus spooked her. “You’re turning the place upside down. What are you up to?”
“I’m not up to anything, Grandpa!” Roxanne blurted without thinking.
Thaddeus didn’t dig deeper. He urged, “Freshen yourself up. You’re getting married.” Then, he left.
Roxanne was stunned. She thought they’d found out about her attempt, but all they wanted was for her to prepare for the wedding.
Something was very wrong, but Roxanne couldn’t put a finger on it. The time was right. The wedding was coming soon. The drug was nowhere to be found, which meant she’d failed.
Roxanne called Hazel to ask if she was faring any better. Alas, Hazel only had bad news. Stefan and Cynthia were still cold to her. They were still able to converse fine enough, but they would immediately shun her whenever she brought up the energy drug.
Hazel tapped into her connections to see if there was any news about the energy drug in the city, but nothing
came up.
“What now?” Roxanne’s face darkened. Two out of three of their plans were busts. That left their last and worst one. She’d have to marry Evan and use that as leverage to control him. At least they could keep Zeke alive.
“God, I don’t want to marry Evan, especially not on his birthday,” Roxanne grumbled.
On the other hand, Thaddeus was happily waiting for Evan to arrive for the wedding. They’d laid out a long red carpet at the entrance. The road was paved with flowers and fireworks just for him.
Evan didn’t show up. He had no idea the wedding was happening either. Sylvie called him that morning and told him to show up at The Gilded Lounge.
Evan smiled. “They’re pulling out all the stops for my birthday.”
The Gilded Lounge was Silverton’s top private club. Local rumors claimed that most deals worth eight figures and more were struck at that very club. It was famous even in Imperia and Uppersea.
Estelle called. “Come over, Evan! It’s going down now! We’re holding a special event just for you!” She was screaming with elation.
All around her was loud music and incessant bellowing. It was a cacophony.
