Chapter 296 When Survival Becomes Obsession

He collapsed to the ground in a miserable heap. After forcing himself back to his feet, he wiped the rain from his face and stared up at the pitch-black sky.

‘Why am I in such a pathetic state? Why am I kneeling like a dog at someone’s doorstep for hours, only to be ignored?’

The thought made him laugh-first in anger, then in something colder. By this point, there was no anger left in him. Only something bitterly absurd.

That night, he didn’t even know how he had managed to carry the unconscious Hazel, Roxanne, and Anya back to Nine Courts. He only knew that just getting them into the car had taken everything out of him-he had stumbled and fallen dozens of times along the way.

Before, the only person he had wanted dead was Evan. Now, everyone in the Leighton family-even Stefan and Cynthia-had joined that list.

Rain hammered relentlessly against the villa’s windows, dull thuds echoing through the room. The sky seemed torn open, unleashing torrents that poured down as if to wash away every sin in the world.

Zeke sat beside the three women, who lay unconscious and burning with fever, quietly watching them.

He hadn’t even bothered to shower. After coming inside, he had simply sat there without moving, leaving a trail of wet footprints behind him.

A flash of lightning tore through the sky, splitting the endless darkness and casting his shadow across the room-stretched tall and twisted, like some grotesque, unknown creature.

The torment of his illness, the helplessness of Hazel, Roxanne, and Anya, and the hostility closing in from every side… all of it was pushing him toward a visible end.

“I just wanted to live… what’s wrong with wanting to live?”

His thoughts drifted back to the past.

The Carter family he came from had been nothing special. With that kind of background, his life had been fated to remain ordinary too-to be just another face lost in the crowd.

Then he met Hazel, Roxanne, and Anya. At first, they were drawn to his appearance. But the more they got to know him, the deeper they fell for him.

He had been lost. On one hand, he reveled in their love. On the other, he walked on eggshells, constantly questioning himself-what had he done to deserve any of it?

Instinctively, he had wanted to refuse. But everything they brought-wealth, power, status-was exactly what he had always longed for.

The elders of their three families, however, had never approved of him. In fact, they openly despised him.

Cornered, he made a decision that would drag him into the abyss. He reinvented himself.

He crafted the image of a noble heir from Imperia, someone of immense influence who his family had merely sent out to gain experience before returning to achieve something great.

It worked. Hazel, Roxanne, and Anya fell for him even harder, completely captivated. But one lie always demanded countless more to sustain it.

From that moment on, it was as if he had opened Pandora’s box-craving the life of someone above everyone else, while living in constant fear of being exposed. Then, by chance, he encountered a group of mysterious individuals.

They called themselves the Black Sun. They specialized in recruiting people with ambition and talent- but no real opportunity.

They had been watching him for a long time. They believed he was the perfect candidate. They promised that if he joined them and passed their trials, he would become someone who stood above the rules of the world itself.

He was tempted. But only after joining did he realize what the Black Sun truly was-a dark organization that combined martial arts, arcane practices, biological research, and human experimentation. Their so- called trials were nothing more than brutal experiments on the human body.

If one survived, one’s future was limitless; if one didn’t, one died. It was the purest version of heaven and hell. And out of everyone in his group, Zeke had been the only one to survive.

But the radiation from the experiment had left him with a rare and deadly illness.

The experiment had failed.

Or perhaps… not entirely.
