Chapter 67 The Ancient Formula

Hazel and Roxanne exchanged a solemn look before nodding in agreement.

“Anya is right. We can’t just give up the moment we hit a snag,” Hazel said firmly. “As long as this misunderstanding remains, it’ll always be a stain on our reputation-a prejudice held against us!”

Hazel was confident that once the air was cleared, the miracle doctor’s opinion of them would change

for the better.

“But how are we even supposed to get an audience with someone of that stature?”

The question hit them immediately, and the trio lapsed back into a frustrated silence. It seemed like they’d hit another obstacle.

Roxanne let out a heavy sigh. “If only I hadn’t stolen that pill to save Evan back then, things would be so different right now.” Her voice was thick with regret.

If she hadn’t taken that pill, she would still be the undisputed successor to the Leighton family, destined to lead the medical world in Silverton.

She wouldn’t be sidelined and suppressed by her own family like she was now. Plus, she could have given that medicine to Zeke instead; any outcome would have been better than this.

She sorely regretted her decision.

“Don’t beat yourself up over it,” Hazel consoled her. “Nobody could have predicted the future.”

Back then, they had exhausted every resource to find a replacement who shared Zeke’s traits, only to find the boy on the brink of death. To keep their last shred of hope alive, the three of them had made a pact: Roxanne would steal her family’s life-saving drug to keep Evan alive.

“Wait, Roxanne,” Hazel said, as a thought struck her. “Don’t you have a high school classmate with deep connections in the medical field? Why don’t you ask if she can help?”

Roxanne slapped her forehead. “Of course! Artemisia! How could I forget her?”

Roxanne had known for a while that Artemisia Stone had returned from her studies abroad, but she’d been too preoccupied with Evan’s situation to reach out.

Providence Hospital was renowned as the finest medical institution in Silverton, largely due to the sprawling medicinal gardens in its backyard.

The Silverton’s elite had given him these fields on a silver platter, and the astronomical costs of maintaining them didn’t cost Caleb a dime. After all, the city’s most powerful families bankrolled everything.

Their directive to Caleb was simple. He didn’t need to worry about the costs. Instead, all he had to do

was focus on developing new medicines and training the next generation.

His daughter, Artemisia, was proving to be even more gifted than he was. It was widely expected that Artemisia would take up his mantle and continue serving the city’s elite once he retired.

Inside the fragrant gardens, a young woman in a white dress was focused entirely on her herbs. Beside her lay a thick stack of papers, all covered in dense notes, yet all discarded as failures.

Artemisia moved through a cycle of frustration and inspiration-frowning in thought one moment, scribbling a breakthrough the next, only to crumble the paper in disappointment a moment later.

She was so deep in her thoughts that she didn’t even notice Caleb approaching.

“Artemisia, put the ancient formula aside for a moment. I have something important to tell you.”
