“And besides, with the way you are right now, if we bond, you might not be able to get out of bed tomorrow. Let Alaric treat you for a few days first. Once you’re stronger, we’ll bond.”
Drake reached for her wrist. “You… really don’t hate me?”
Seeing the seriousness in his eyes, Emma shook her head firmly. “I don’t. If I hated you, I wouldn’t want to bond with you.”
Drake slowly released her hand. His long fingers brushed her cheek with a feather–light touch. “Do you like me then?” he asked.
The question mattered to him more than anything. Just asking it made his chest tighten. He was terrified she would say she didn’t.
Unlike Edric, who had chosen Emma without hesitation the first time he met her, Drake hadn’t been looking for a huntress at all, nor had he known anything about Emma.
The first time he saw her, he only thought she wasn’t particularly stunning, but she was independent, and her smile was genuinely pretty. Especially when she received star coins–she would squint and smile like a little treasure hoarder, almost like a Drakonid hatchling. A little cute, a little endearing. Being around her had simply felt easy.
Later, when she went into the forest to hunt, his subordinates reported that she had run into a high–tier Chitinid. The moment he heard it, he found himself worrying about her safety, flying through the night to look for her. In all his life, that was the first time he had ever worried about someone, much less a female. He just hadn’t understood then that what he felt was affection.
Then, the Drakonid duties pulled him back to the Aquadome. During that time apart, she kept slipping into his thoughts–what she might be doing, whether she had run into danger again.
He had sent Emma several messages back then, but she only replied once, a single text saying she was fine and thanking him for his concern. From that reply, Drake immediately understood she didn’t want to keep in contact.
If a female didn’t want to entertain him, a male had no business pestering her. He didn’t want to trouble her, so he forced himself not to send anything more.
He thought their connection ended there. But shortly after, Thero called and told him Emma had run into danger on A1. Her mate Edric had gone to ask Thero for help so they could retaliate against the Violet Obsidian Clan.
Hearing that infuriated Drake. The Ophidians were clearly tired of living if they dared touch the female he cared about.
He had fully intended to wipe that clan out himself, but Thero said Emma and her mate already had their own plans for revenge.
Drake knew he had no position to interfere with Emma’s decisions, so he only told Thero to follow her orders. If the Violet Obsidian Clan didn’t cooperate, they could simply be erased.
Annihilating a beast clan was nothing new. Ever since he took control of the three domains, he had done it more times than he could count. Even if the Violet Obsidian Clan belonged to the Central Planet and not to any of the domains, taking them out would have been effortless.
During that period, Thero reported Emma’s situation to him constantly. Drake saw his chance–he wanted to meet Emma again, to talk to her about bonding. He didn’t want their connection to remain a mere transaction. He wanted to bond with her.
Therian emotions were straightforward: if they liked someone, they showed it. He was no different. When he learned she was heading to the Central Planet, he made sure to go too. He didn’t appear there for official business–he went for her.

He spent a whole day thinking up an excuse to ask her out to eat. And then he ruined everything. When he went to explain afterward, he ended up indulging too much and got drunk instead.
The next morning, with his memory muddled, he thought he had crossed a line with her while drunk. He planned to apologize, but thanks to Marcus, he never got the chance before being dragged away.
The more he recalled those moments, the more insecure he became. He had never felt this unsure in his life. He had been born powerful; whatever he wanted, he took–even if he had to seize it by force..
