Kael merely shrugged upon hearing Vice President Jonas’s words.
"Well, I guess that’s how it is," he said, before casually shifting the conversation back to the actual reason he’d called. "Anyway, Vice President Jonas, this isn’t actually why I called."
"Eh?" Jonas sounded surprised. There was a brief pause before his tone changed, as though he’d suddenly realized something. "Hold on. Are you saying you didn’t call to ask for help with the ongoing case?"
"No, I didn’t," Kael replied calmly. "I’ve already applied the Jus Maleficii law to the case, so I think I’m good to go."
"Yeah, I heard something about that."
Silence followed for a moment.
Jonas leaned back in his seat as he considered Kael’s words. He’d already heard about the Jus Maleficii being invoked, but he also knew the situation surrounding the case wasn’t a simple matter, the severity of Kael’s crime was something even the Hunter Association couldn’t simply ignore without proper justification.
"Kid, are you really that confident in the evidence you have to offer?" Jonas finally asked, his voice growing more serious.
"I mean, the severity of your situation is quite intense. Even with the Jus Maleficii, you’re going to need substantial evidence to actually resolve this. It’s not something that can just disappear because you’ve handed over a few pieces of information."
"Yeah, I know," Kael answered without hesitation. "And I’m pretty confident about it."
He genuinely was.
His confidence didn’t come from the crimes of the Dark Viper Guild alone. If that were all he had, he wouldn’t be nearly as relaxed as he was now.
What made him confident was the people involved.
None of them were small figures.
The Dark Viper Guild’s connections reached far beyond a single guild. Influential figures within the community were involved, and even high-ranking officials within the Hunter Association itself had ties to the matter.
If the Association had been left to investigate everything themselves, the process could have dragged on for months, perhaps even longer. They would have needed to track down everyone involved, gather evidence, verify every connection, uncover financial records, investigate the guild’s activities, and determine exactly how deep the corruption ran.
Even after all that, there would have been no guarantee that the investigation would succeed.
But Kael had done something different.
What he’d done wasn’t just tell the Association where the bodies were buried, he’d handed them the shovel too.
The evidence he’d provided gave the Association a direct path into the entire network of connections the Dark Viper Guild had built. Instead of them having to spend countless resources figuring out where to even begin, they already had everything they needed to start dismantling every person connected, right down to the roots.
Once the investigation began, the people involved would eventually be exposed. After that, capturing and prosecuting them would be a matter of following the evidence Kael had already provided.
Taking all of that into consideration, Kael was confident that his crime of wiping out the Dark Viper Guild would ultimately be waived once the investigation was completed and the people responsible were brought to justice.
And considering how much evidence he had given them, that probably wouldn’t take nearly as long as it otherwise would have.
"Well, that’s a shame," Jonas said.
His voice carried a hint of genuine disappointment.
Jonas had been keeping an eye on Kael for quite some time now, and there were several reasons for that. Their previous deal was one of them, but it wasn’t the only reason. Kael had displayed a level of potential that Jonas had rarely, if ever, encountered before. The young man was only eighteen, yet the things he had already accomplished were enough to make even someone of Jonas’s position pay attention.
Naturally, Jonas wanted to recruit him.
That was why he had been waiting for Kael to call.
Jonas knew Kael’s crime was severe, but he also knew enough about the young man to understand that he wasn’t some bloodthirsty maniac who had simply decided to wipe out an entire guild for no reason. There had to be something behind it, and if Kael had truly possessed enough evidence to justify his actions, Jonas was more than willing to step in.
As the Vice President of the Hunter Association, he possessed considerable authority, including veto power that could potentially be used to prevent Kael from suffering serious consequences.
If Kael had come to him asking for help, Jonas could have stepped in at the right moment and solved the problem.
Kael would owe him a favor.
