Even though Simon had a terrible impression of Edmond, there was no denying the man's looks, capability, and background were completely flawless.
Once you've seen the ocean, every other body of water pales in comparison.
He felt genuinely sad for Sheila.
But she couldn't seriously intend to be alone forever, could she?
After that, Sheila's life essentially returned to normal.
Her research project finally achieved a massive breakthrough.
Truthfully, it was all thanks to York, who couldn't stand seeing Sheila practically living in her office day and night, and forcefully ordered her to take some time off.
Since she couldn't meet up with Tilly, Sheila went to the amusement park alone.
Staring at the shimmering surface of the lake and watching parents paddle boats with their children, inspiration suddenly struck her exhausted mind.
No matter the project, the hardest part was never taking it from one to a hundred.
It was taking it from zero to one.
Creating something out of absolutely nothing.
Sheila sprinted back to her computer, working straight through for two days and two nights without a wink of sleep, completely smashing through the bottleneck her project had been stuck in.
By the time she finished, she didn't even have the energy to go home. She simply collapsed onto her desk and passed out.
Cecil tried calling her, but when she didn't answer, he eventually got a hold of Simon.
When Sheila finally woke up, she had been asleep at her desk for three hours.
Her arm was completely numb, and there was a deep red crease pressed into her cheek.
Cecil came to pick her up, and upon seeing her state, he burst into incredibly ungentlemanly laughter.
The crease on Sheila's face still hadn't faded by the time she got downstairs, making her the prime target for Cecil's teasing.
Cecil took her out to eat.
When Sheila first returned from abroad, Cecil had stayed behind to wrap things up for a few days.
By the time he got back, Sheila was already swamped with work.
Cecil let out a sigh before finally explaining, "There was an issue with one of the company's projects recently. The Halley family swooped in and snatched it."
Her fork paused.
Cecil continued, "To me, losing one project is nothing. But the signal it sends is entirely abnormal. The Halley and Rhodes families have always minded their own business. Edmond suddenly breaking the rules... do you know what that means?"
Sheila stayed silent.
Cecil added, "Sheila, I didn't want to bring this up with you. But I'm worried Edmond is doing this because of you."
"Because of me?" Sheila froze, then shook her head. "Cecil, you're overthinking it. Edmond... he wouldn't do something like this just because of me."
"I'm not saying he's doing it out of lingering affection. A guy like him doesn't have a heart to begin with," Cecil said. "What I'm saying is, he thinks you're with me now. You dumped him and chose me. To the outside world, that looks like you took his pride and stomped it into the dirt. Any man would lose his mind over that, let alone Edmond Halley."
Sheila had the exact same thought.
There was no way Edmond was hung up on her.
It was nothing but fragile male ego and wounded pride.
