Chapter 354

Nearby the car door slammed, Grayson stepped back, and the car started. It moved forward, carrying Reginald

away.

When it was out of sight, Josephine said, “I really like him.”

“Why didn’t you say something? We could have stopped him, at least for a time. Or arranged a visit there,” I said. Josephine was a princess. It wouldn’t be a scandal for them to consider each other as romantic options, to court each other.

“He said nothing,” Josephine said. “He just packed and left.” She swallowed hard, and the pain of rejection filled her eyes. “If he returned my interest, wouldn’t he have said something?”

“We don’t know that…” I said.

She shook her head. “Maybe I’m better off alone anyway. Since when as romance ever worked out for me? And with my genes, with my mother… Maybe I don’t deserve love. Maybe my mother’s genes shouldn’t be passed on.”

“Josie, you are not your mother, and any children you would bear would be blessed to have you as their mother. I don’t know what Reginald’s thinking, but whether he has interest or not, you deserve love.”

Tears filled her eyes, and I hugged her.

“Don’t be sad, Aunt Josie!” Madison said, and hugged Josie’s sad. Alex took point on her other side, and we all held her in a group hug.

As Grayson came back to us, he looked at me with a slightly raised brow. I gave him a knowing look, wordlessly promising to fill him in later. He gave a subtle nod and didn’t ask any questions aloud.

Josie cried for only a moment before she pulled herself together. “How about some ice cream, yeah?” she said, mostly to the children, as she blinked back some tears. “I could go for a little treat.”

“Yay!” the kids cheered.

Josie tried to smile but it wobbled at the edges.

Reginald’s POV

Yes, I needed to return to my kingdom to ensure everything remained in order, but that wasn’t the only reason I was going. It wasn’t even the main reason.

I needed to return home to ready my kingdom and myself for my future engagement to Josephine.

I had yet to ask her, or to express my feelings in any way. We hadn’t even kissed yet. But surely she could sense my intent. As I could sense that she had returning feelings for me.

After I made the arrangements, I would return in time for Grayson and Lillian’s wedding, ask Josephine to be my wife, and never be apart from her again. Simple as that. It had no reason to be complicated.

I relaxed in the backseat of the car that carried me across the border, looking out the window as the scenery became more familiar. Soon, the car pulled into the long drive of the Lycan palace. It was something of a relief to

be home again, and I exhaled a deep breath as the car pulled to a stop.

Thanking the driver, I left the luggage to my servants as I went to the doors of the palace and walked through.

“Thank goodness you’ve returned, Alpha,” said my Beta. “We’ve all been very busy making wedding arrangements. We were worried you might not make it back in time for the wedding.”

I paused. “How did you know about my engagement? I haven’t told anyone yet.” Not even Josephine.

Beta gave me a strange look. “The Council arranged things. The whole of the kingdom knows about it.”

My brow furrowed. None of this made sense. “The Council…” As I thought it over, a sense of dread rose within me. “You are talking about an arranged marriage.”

“Yes.”
