Chapter 357

Lillian’s POV

I stared at Reggie, unable to believe my eyes. What in the world was he doing with her? Why was she even here?

And why were we being greeted in the throne room, so formally, around so many high ranking Lycan nobles and the council, when this was supposed to be a friendly visit?

“What the hell are you doing here, Odette?” Grayson snapped as he started forward, moving toward her.

I moved at the same time, toward Reginald. “Why is she here, Reggie?”

Reginald ignored me, choosing instead to step protectively in front of Odette, facing off against Grayson.

“You come into my home and disrespect my fiancé?” Reginald snarled, so different than his usual composure.

Wait. Fiancé?

I stumbled back, falling into line with Josephine, who was holding hands with each of the children. Her face was stricken, her skin pale, but she had no other outside reaction, likely for the sake of the children.

Around us, the nobles and council members looked at us like we were the ones at fault here. Like their King wasn’t presently losing his mind.

Grayson started growling, but Reginald matched it.

“I’m sorry to be such a bother to you, Reggie,” Odette said sweetly, clutching at Reginald’s arm.

Josephine looked at me. “He’s not himself.”

I was suspecting that too, but having Josephine say it gave more fuel to my suspicions.

“He’s perfect just the way he is,” Odette said.

Whispers started. “Who are they to speak ill of our King?”

“Grayson,” I said. “We… are in the wrong here. We should go.”

Grayson hesitated. Odette was an enemy to us. I knew he didn’t want to leave things like this, unresolved.

“Daddy? What’s wrong with Cousin Reginald?” Madison asked.

That was enough to make Grayson move. He held out his arms, as if trying to shield us, as he slowly backed us away from Reginald. I moved to the front of our group as we moved toward the door, protecting us in that direction, as Josie and the kids stayed between us.

“I hope you can come to accept me as Reginald’s wife,” Odette called after us. “But only if you can accept me as Reggie’s bride. We’d love to have you at the wedding. I’d never want to come between family.”

I didn’t look back, but I felt Grayson’s repressed anger through the bond, burning so very near my own.

This was not what I had been expecting when we received that invitation.

When we left the throne room, even the servants scowled at us. We had rooms for us being held somewhere in

the palace, but with only a glance between us, Grayson and I were on the same page.

“We are not staying here,” he said.

We left, returning to our car.

“We should just go back home,” Josephine said.

“We can’t leave things like this,” I said. “Something is clearly wrong with Reginald. It’s like he’s under some kind of spell.”

Josie fell quiet, softly shaking her head.

“He might be, he might not,” Grayson said. “But why invite us? There must be a reason, and I have no desire to drag our children into this.”

“We’ll be okay, Daddy!” Madison said.

“We’re adventurers, remember?” Alex added.

We had brought one of their usual attendants from home, along with a couple other servants who were to assist us at the palace. All of us now were heading back toward the border.

After an hour, we stopped at a rest area. One of the guards walked the perimeter while the kids played on the playground.

Josephine, Grayson, and I sat at one of the picnic tables, no closer to deciding what to do.

With the kids out of earshot, Grayson spoke more freely. “This is a trap, laid by Odette. She wants to harm us and the children, and somehow use Reginald to her own ends. We have to go back. I refuse to endanger the children.”

I also had no desire to endanger the kids. They would be going back either way, certainly. But… Reginald was dear to me. My only true family beyond Teacher who was off in the wind once again.

“She has somehow bewitched Reggie,” I said. “Reginald knows all that she has done. He would not so quickly forgive her, especially not enough to marry her.” I glanced at Josie. “Particularly not when his heart belongs to another.”

“I have no hold over his heart,” she said. “He must be so much crueler than I thought, to invite me just to rub my nose in his engagement.”

“You said yourself, he’s not himself.”

“Love makes men become strange.”

Hurt was doing the same to Josephine, making her blind to what she had to know was true. She and Reginald hadn’t known each other forever, but they seemed to have enough affection to have a better relationship than

this.

But regardless of their closeness, I knew my cousin. This wasn’t him.

“Odette must have forged that letter to lure us all here,” I said.

Josie shook her head. “How would she have known about my crush on Reginald? No one knew of that but the two
