Chapter 356
Too slowly, I felt the cool of metal she slid onto my skin. A bracelet. A cuff.
My thoughts swayed and swirled. What was I saying? I couldn’t quite remember. Everything seemed so different now. I tried to hold onto trains of thought but it was like holding onto grains of sand slipping through my fingers.
“You… can’t…”
“Of course, I can, silly,” Odette said, smiling. Teasing. “You love me so much. You’ll give me whatever I want, remember? After all, you are my fiancé.”
No, whispered my wolf, clawing at the prison of my mind, right before I said, “Yes. My fiancé.”
Lillian’s POV
Wedding plans continued. After spending so much money on the war, and wasting it with the Queen’s trivialities, every detail had to be careful and inexpensive. Each bolt of fabric, I requested made from local villages to help spring forward their economy. Each flower, had to be locally sourced.
Things were truly starting to come together.
One of the more troublesome details was asking who to stand beside me as my maids of honor. I already had a list, of course, but one of them I wanted to be Josie. Since Reginald left, Josie has become quieter, sadder in an understated way. She still attended events, still put on a brave face, but her smile wasn’t real anymore.
I had no idea if including her in the wedding would help or just make things worse. When I tried to talk to her about the subject, she avoided me, finding excuses to leave the conversation.
Eventually, after another failed attempted, which ended with Josie telling me she had to go wash her hair, I
went to see Grayson.
He had been working a lot, trying to keep the kingdom on track towards recovery. He cared about our wedding, making suggestions when he could, but I didn’t mind taking the lead on most things with that. Right now, though, I really needed his advice.
He looked up as I came into the room, and the way his eyes lit up made my heart speed forward.
“Gods, I love when you walk into a room,” he said.
I blushed. Normally, his saying something like that might lead to other activities, but today, I needed to maintain focus.
“I need to talk to you about Josie.”
“She still acting troubled?”
“Yes,” I said. “I’m starting to think that Reginald made an even greater impression on her than I thought. I wish he hadn’t left so soon.”
“About that,” Grayson said, and pushed aside some of his paperwork. He lifted an envelope. Inside, seemed to be an invitation. “This was delivered today.”
The invitation was just a short letter.

Grayson.
I hope you, Lily, and the children would consider visiting me soon. I have great news I want to share, too important to put into writing.
Best,
Reginald.
P.S. Please bring Josie.
How strange. Usually, any correspondence from Reginald came straight to me. But this time, it was clearly addressed to Grayson. And so formally too. Well, until the Josie part.
Maybe he had some surprise for me and the children, and speaking to Grayson, he felt somewhat awkward.
I wasn’t sure.
But… I could see the benefit to this trip. It might be fun to take the kids back to the place where they had spent
some years.
And…
“He wants Josephine there. Maybe to continue their courtship?” I said, perhaps being foolishly hopeful.
