A tiny, pitch–black, fletchless crossbow bolt hissed past, skimming her earlobe and actually slicitig off a lock of her hair.
The assault wasn’t over.
A fraction of a second after the bolt flew past, the light in front of her shifted. From the previously empty shadows of the hall, a dark silhouette materialized out of thin air like a phantom.
Exploiting the lethal opening created by Riley leaning backward, completely off balance and unable to generate force, a glint of cold steel flashed in the figure’s hand.
It was a long blade. The edge carved a deadly arc through the air, hacking straight toward Riley’s face!
The strike was blindingly fast and taken from an impossible angle, slotting perfectly into her defenseless blind spot.
CLANG-!
The ear–splitting crash of metal striking metal echoed down the dungeon corridor, sparking a massive shower of orange sparks.
With zero time to evade, Riley relied entirely on muscle memory. She instinctively crossed her arms upward, snapping her dual heavy battleaxes into a cross guard right in front of her face at the exact millisecond of impact.
A sickening soreness shot through her arms as the sheer force blasted her sliding backward.
She skidded a solid seven or eight paces before stomping hard onto the stone floor, forcibly arresting her momentum.
Using the created distance, Riley coldly locked her eyes onto her ambusher.
It was a lean, tall man. He gripped an outrageously sized, serrated greatsword with both hands, the blade still radiating the lingering, dull red glow of an active skill.
His features were sharp and vicious, marred by an old scar that ran from his left cheek down to his neck. His eyes were arrogant and chillingly apathetic.
But what truly put Riley on high alert were his stats. Once inside a dungeon, gear always leaked a certain apra, and the raw power behind that clash just now couldn’t be faked.
This guy was absolutely decked out in a full set of purple gear! It wasn’t even a stretch to assume he had orange items on him.
Riley’s brain went into overdrive. When diet a powerhouse of this caliber pop up on the server?
Someone with this level of combat power could not be a nobody.
Even BloodWolf, the former leader of the number–one WarWolf Guild, didn’t have gear of this magnitude.
Nor had she heard of anyone like this among the new overlords, the Sanctuary Guild. Yet, judging by the sheer lethality of his strike and his stacked loadout, this was someone completely off Riley’s radar.
Just as Riley sized him up, an undisguised flash of shock flickered in the man’s eyes.

His previous strike was a full–power, skill–infused blow. He knew its payload better than anyone; even a tank of the same level, completely spec’d into Vitality, would lose half their HP taking that hit off–guard.
Yet the woman standing before him had merely slid backward a few steps. Her health bar hadn’t even budged.
Shock aside, the man didn’t waste a single breath. Seeing his ambush fail, he violently stomped his foot into the ground.
Boom!
Like an arrow leaving the bow, the man blurred into an afterimage, launching his entire body straight at Riley.
The serrated greatsword in his hands carved a massive half–moon arc of energy through the air, shrieking as it aimed directly for Riley’s throat.
The probing phase was over.
From that single clash of brute force, Riley had generated a baseline read on his strength, speed, and explosive power. His stats were insane, but she was far from outmatched.
Now that she had his measure, there was no need to play nice. A chilling glint flashed in Riley’s eyes.
Being forcibly dragged into this dungeon and forced to abandon a group of defenseless natives to a monster horde had stoked a raging, unvented fury inside her.
Getting ambushed on top of that? Facing the man’s secondary charge, Riley dropped all restraint. Instead of retreating, she pressed
the offensive.
