Chapter 497 The Ambush Setup

Right now, these lurkers looked exactly like hyenas that had caught the scent of blood, brazenly sizing up Riley’s seven–man squad as they walked out of the market. Low whispers hissed through the shadows.
“Fat sheep?”
“Just came out of the market. Definitely loaded up on supplies…”
It was glaringly obvious that these people had already figured out the market’s rules)
They were either too stingy or too broke to pay the 50–token entry fee. So, like vultures waiting for roadkill, they camped the exit. The second any survivor who looked like an easy mark stepped out, they’d swarm them, using murder to fund their own survival.
Under the dungeon’s brutal “100% full loot drop upon death” rule, robbery was always the most cost–effective business model.
Feeling the naked malice radiating from all sides, LoneWolf tightened his grip on his heavy shield, and Hanna quietly palmed a poisoned dagger. The atmosphere around the squad instantly dropped to absolute zero.
Riley’s expression didn’t change; she just cast a chilling glare over the perimeter.
The sheer lethal intent in her eyes, coupled with the faint, murderous aura bleeding off her, caused a few of the thugs who were about to stand up to freeze in their tracks.
In the current dungeon phase, where most large guilds had been scattered to the wind, a unified seven–man squad was a serious force to be reckoned with. Even though there were fifteen or twenty “vultures” camping the exit, they were from different factions. Paranoia ran deep among them, and nobody wanted to be the sacrificial idiot who charged first and soaked up the initial damage.
Even if they managed to wipe out Riley’s squad, the vultures were terrified of getting backstabbed by the other bystanders while looting.
For a brief moment, the air in the corridor solidified into a bizarre, tense stalemate.
“Ignore them,” Riley ordered in a low voice, not giving the lurkers a second glance. “Maintain formation. Hug the right wall. Hapna, start pinging the others. It’s time to group up.”
“On it,” Hanna slid to the center of the formation and pulled out her cornms cards.
Ignoring the greedy but hesitant stares, the seven of them crunched over the loose gravel, marching steadily down the route marked on their map.
It wasn’t until Riley’s squad completely vanished around a deep bend in the corridor that the hair–trigger tension finally eased.
However, Riley didn’t know that among the ambushers harboring dark motives, not everyone was scared off by their numbers.
On the left side of the corridor, hiding in the dark shadow cast by a massive stalagmite, squatted two survivors in dark grey gear. One held a faintly glowing comms card, while the other had a translucent system panel open, rapidly typing into a private chat channel.
The man’s fingers flew across the holographic keyboard, a manic gleam in his eyes.
“Got eyes on them! They just walked out of the market! The two women leading the pack are wearing yellow windbreakers. One redhead, one with black hair and a white streak. Seven people total. That them?” the man reported in the channel

“Yes! That’s them! That crew spent a fortune inside the market. I don’t know exactly what they bought, but considering they even had the luxury to sit around and sip drinks, they are absolute fat sheep! They look like they have no idea what they’re doing. Take
‘em down!”
The man hiding behind the stalagmite licked his dry lips and typed a response.
“Alright, that’s the play. I won’t waste another comms card. Keep an eye on the other marks inside the market and keep us posted. I’ll get the Boss to flank them right now. Based on their heading, they have to pass through the ‘Corridor of Bones! We’ll cut across and ambush them there!”
