The guard clutched his nose and tried to fight back, only to get tackled to the ground by the surge of charging survivors behind

him.

This scene played out everywhere in an instant.

A man who’d had his wristguard stolen earlier climbed back to his feet and lunged at the player who’d looted him. A young girl hiding in the ruins gritted her teeth, raised her crossbow, and fired at the outpost’s flank. Dozens of other survivors swarmed toward the loot crates dropped by dead guards, desperate to reclaim their stolen belongings.

Riley did nothing to stop them.

But she also kept her guild members from getting pulled into the chaos.

The ragtag group that had guarded the hall entrance scattered fast, all fleeing inside the safe zone. After all, once they stepped through those doors, no one could attack them anymore.

Yet Riley held her ground and didn’t follow them in right away.

The entrance stood empty.

Now that the original blockers had retreated into the safe zone, no one was bold enough to stand in their way.

Three heavy ballistas sat idle on the high platform. The makeshift plank and stone barriers were smashed to pieces. Scattered backpacks, loose bolts, and broken weapons littered the ground, left behind in the raiderspanic retreat.

From the outside, the blockade was fully broken.

But after a quick scan, Riley lifted a hand to stop her guild members from stepping forward.

We’re not going in yet.

RedBean froze in confusion.

The survivors behind them halted too, unease spreading across their faces.

They’d just fought their way through the blockade, still covered in blood and dust. The safe zone was righthere, only a few steps away, and every single one of them was desperate to get inside. Some even stared straight at the glowing gate in the hall, completely captivated.

Still, Riley refused to move aside.

She turned toward the platform first. Bruce, take two men and reset the ballistas. You don’t need to fully repair the broken one. Just make it look functional. Turn the other two to face outward.

Bruce nodded at once.

Got it.

Riley gestured to both sides of the entrance. Hanna, restack the loose planks and stones. Don’t fully block the path. Leave an open walkway for people to pass through. LoneWolf, take a team and watch the flanks. Report immediately if a large force approaches.

tonewolf nodded and split off with his men.

In the blink of an eye, Hope Guild reclaimed full control of the broken outpost.

This time though, the barriers were not built to bully and trap the weak. They were set up to hold off an incoming counterattack.

RedBean glanced at the growing crowd of survivors and quickly caught on. She stepped beside Riley and lowered her voice.

The raiders from the other three checkpoints are coming, aren’t they?

They will,Riley confirmed.

She bent down to pick up a heavy bolt, testing its weight in her hand.

They set up blockades at all four entrances on purpose. This wasn’t some random move. They split the territory to rob resources together. Now that we’ve broken one checkpoint, their total loot will drop hard. They’ll find out soon enough.

RedBean’s expression turned serious. If they all rush here at once, we’re outnumbered.

That’s why we can’t wait for them to arrive before we prepare.

Riley handed the bolt back to Bruce. Fix as much as you can in 20 minutes.

Understood.

Bruce led his team straight up to the platform.

They didn’t know advanced repairs, but resetting, repositioning, and reloading the ballistas was simple enough. Riley still had the latches she’d removed earlier. She refitted them to the two functional weapons and doublechecked their firing angles personally.

The ballistas now aimed straight down the tunnel leading to the central hall.

Just the sight of those thick, spearlike bolts was enough to make any attacker think twice.

The watching survivors slowly changed their minds as they saw Hope Guild fortify the position instead of rushing into the safe

zone.

Many had grown scared. They feared Riley would simply replace the old raiders and become a new tyrant controlling the entrance.

One survivor spoke up nervously. Can wepay less? Eighty percent of our supplies is way too much.

Riley glanced over at him.

The man instantly fell silent and stepped back, afraid he’d angered her.

But Riley smiled faintly and spoke in a calm tone.

We’re not taking any of your supplies. We’re just fixing this outpost to keep order. Everyone can enter. No pushing, no crowding. Single file through the middle path.

She nodded toward Hanna.

Hanna immediately took over, raising her voice for everyone to hear.
