“Oh?” Riley looked at him with a half–smile. “So you’re not here to finish me off?”
“Of course not!” The squad leader lowered his greatsword, putting on a weak act as he shuffled forward. “You got here first, so the mine’s yours. Nightfall always respects finders‘ rights. We were just passing through… honestly.”
Even as he spoke, his left hand was busy behind his back, signaling frantically.
Out of view, the woman at the rear quietly slid a glass bottle filled with murky green liquid from her hip pouch.
A Potion of Weakness.
It was their trump card. Once thrown, the toxic mist would sap fifty percent of the stats from anyone caught in the blast–just long enough to turn even a top–ranked player into easy prey.
The only trick was making sure it hit Riley.
Riley watched their clumsy maneuvering and smirked inwardly.
Their performance was utterly pitiful; their expressions practically screamed that they were poised to betray them at the first chance.
“Alright.” Riley played along, nodding as if she bought it. “I don’t need the ore. But since you’re just ‘passing through, how about you hand over some of your gear too? Call it a toll, and we’re even.”
“Our gear?” The leader’s expression tightened.
“Don’t push it,” he replied, voice strained. “We’re all gonna be operating around here. Why not work together? A mine this size is too much for one person. We could split the profit–everyone wins.”
Seeing he was still stalling, Riley kept up the act.
“Sounds fair. But I really like this bow,” she said, gesturing with it. “Consider it a thank–you gift. Oh, and what about your friend over there?” She pointed at Zach, who was still clutching his bleeding arm and groaning loudly. “That looks… painful.”
“You- Zach caught the mockery in her tone. His face flushed with anger, eyes burning into her.
“It’s fine, it’s fine,” the leader cut in, holding Zach back with a stiff smile. “Just a scratch–total misunderstanding. If you want the bow, take it.”
Riley slung the bow over her shoulder and casually yanked her other axe from the rock wall.
If she hadn’t noticed them inching closer, angling to give the woman a clear throwing lane, she might have almost believed they’d grown a conscience.
“Okay then. Since you’re being so reasonable, I’ll just take my bear and go,” Riley said, turning toward Neeko in bear form as she gave a subtle wink.

Simon, the burly shield–bearer, surged forward behind his tower shield. The rest clustered behind him, hiding their movements as they rushed to close the distance.
Riley dodged sideways toward the cave entrance and hurled an axe straight at the shield, drawing all eyes.
“CLANG!”
The axe struck hard, leaving a dent but not breaking through. Even so, the impact shoved Simon several steps back, his boots scraping against gravel.
Riley charged forward, scooping up the axe as she moved.
With their line broken, the leader abandoned caution. He raised his greatsword and brought it down in a heavy overhand chop, aiming to overpower her through brute force.
But Riley was already inside his reach.
“So fast!”
“CRACK–CLANG!”
A sharp, numbing pain shot through the leader’s arms. The skin over his palms split instantly. His prized greatsword–a solid green–grade weapon was caught and held cold between Riley’s twin axes, the blades hovering just inches from his face.
“How… How is her Strength this high?!”
He stared, horrified, into Riley’s calm eyes up close.
He was a pure Strength–built warrior. Between his guild shoulder guards and his weapon’s bonuses, he’d hit 16 Strength–a top–tier build at this stage in the game.
And yet this woman was overwhelming him with sheer stats.
Absolute stat domination.
“Zoe–the potion, now!” he yelled, desperation clawing at his voice.
Instead, a woman’s scream echoed behind him.
From the shadows, a jaguar pounced without a sound, slamming into Zoe and snatching the green glass bottle from her grasp.
Before anyone could react, Neeko–already at the tunnel exit–shifted back into human form. She tilted her head, flashed a cheeky grin, and waved the potion bottle at them.
The Nightfall squad stared in confused disbelief. They glanced back where the bear had been standing
