“No, I won’t.”
“Is your transfer back to Eldoria because of your boyfriend?”
Milka replied, “I can’t deny he’s part of the reason, but my father’s health and orders from upper management also brought me back.”
“If you had to choose—stay in Eldoria or return to headquarters—which would it be?”
Milka didn’t hesitate. “I’d stay here.”
“And if the company tells you to transfer?”
“Has that order come down yet? If not, I’m not interested in ‘what if’ questions.”
“Fair enough. Let’s talk about work.” Fielding’s voice turned more businesslike. “Last quarter, our longtime partners at Suncrest Group missed their targets. That account’s your responsibility. Anything to say?”
Milka just smiled. “I suppose headquarters already heard some gossip. I don’t have much to add. If Suncrest Group has an issue, they can come to me directly. If it’s just colleagues with complaints, there’s no need for all this behind-the-scenes drama.”
Fielding picked up on her meaning—she knew someone was reporting on her. Trying to smooth things over, he said quickly, “This is just a routine check. Don’t take it to heart.”
After the call, Milka headed back to the office. She looked straight at Director Grant’s office, just as he looked up and caught her eye.
Grant’s heart jumped. He blinked, then forced a calm nod at Milka before ducking back into his office.
Anya took a big bite, her eyes shining. “Chad told me this morning he’s free this weekend to go home with me and meet my little brother!”
Anya was so cheerful that even work drama couldn’t touch her. But when she noticed Milka barely picking at her food, her concern kicked in. “Milka, you don’t look right today. Did Uncle Mars do something? Tell me, I’ll set him straight!”
Milka broke into laughter. “Oh yeah? How would you do that?”
“I learned from my aunties—if their husbands mess up, they have their friends tell them off so the guys get the hint and apologize. So, tell me what Uncle Mars did, and I’ll make sure he comes running to make it up to you.”
Anya’s innocent scheming was too cute, and Milka’s bad mood just melted away under her sunny energy. She laughed, “It’s not Uncle Mars. Headquarters called me today—they think I’m slacking off because I’m dating someone, so now they’re investigating me.”
