Wayne held the phone. "Daddy, Mommy spent a lot of money today."
Officer Chad chuckled over the line. "I make money so you and your mom can spend it, buddy."
Molly playfully rubbed the beanie on her son's head. "Hey, are you snitching on me? Keep it up and I'll spend his entire month's salary tonight."
Milka and Anya arrived at the location pinned on their phones. Stepping out of their cabs into the freezing air, they hurried over to the street food cart.
The small plastic stools around the cart were already filling up. Even though it wasn't quite seven o'clock, the sky was pitch black.
The snow had paused briefly but was now swirling in the air again.
Steam billowed from the cart, a simple canopy shielding the boiling pots from the snowfall, filling the street with a mouthwatering aroma.
Henry and Wayne were sandwiched safely in the middle. Mia and Milka managed the little tiger cub, while Molly and Anya took care of Wayne.
"Mommy, I want that tofu."
Mia picked up a skewer and placed it in her son's bowl. "When did you get back, Milka?"
Milka chewed on a spicy skewer, the heat finally warming her up. "The afternoon before yesterday. I met up with some old overseas colleagues yesterday, so I just stayed in town."
Mia grabbed another skewer loaded with two meatballs. She slid one into Henry's bowl and kept the other for herself.
Anya asked, "Milka, are you staying for good this time?"
Milka nodded. "I have to head back soon to get some documents and my degree authenticated for an exam next month. But I'll stay here to spend New Year's with my in-laws before I fly out."
