Unfortunately, his girl was far too eager to help, too innocent to think about the darker sides of life.
Leo had to be the one to anticipate the dangers for her.
Anya finally understood her boyfriend's concern. "Chad, then how do we make sure he's too scared to cause trouble at the office?"
Leo sighed. "...You still want to get involved in this mess."
Anya puffed out her cheeks. "Chad, I'm not really getting that involved."
Leo saw right through her. The girl sitting on his lap was beautiful, a great cook, and completely oblivious to the world's malice. Growing up, her parents had shielded her from every danger. The moment she left for college, the responsibility of protecting her had seamlessly shifted to him.
Leo gave her a strict list of rules, forbidding her from overstepping. Thankfully, Anya was obedient and sensible. She nodded earnestly, and only then did Leo pat her leg in relief. "Get up. Go wash up first. I need to finish a design and write a descriptive essay, then I'll come to bed."
"Okay."
Anya strictly followed every rule Leo set.
From then on, Janice went to meet Denny alone. Anya stayed completely out of the loop regarding the specific details of the divorce proceedings.
Janice easily realized the young girl had been coached by her family. Anya still offered support, but with perfect, measured boundaries.
Janice stared at her in silence.
It took the entire lunch break for Janice to untangle Anya's complex family tree. "So... the woman I met the other day is actually...?"
"Yeah, she's my boyfriend's aunt. She and my boyfriend have been best friends for over a decade. I also have an incredibly beautiful, slightly arrogant aunt. Their connection is amazing; they've been best friends for over ten years too."
"It's great to be young," Janice murmured.
"Janice, as long as you keep a young mindset, you'll always be young," Anya said cheerfully. "Hansen is in his seventies or eighties, and he's trendier than I am." Anya pulled out her phone and opened her chat with Hansen. "Look, Hansen always sends me links to click so he can get game credits. He even asks me to play video games with him. He stays up late secretly playing under the covers. He even went to see the new blockbuster movie and sent me voice memos highly recommending it."
