Eventually, Lizzy ended up in Laurel's arms.
"I don't know how to do this either!"
When Annie found out her daughter was with Laurel, she said, "Laurel, I have one request. Run if you must, but don't take Lizzy with you. She's too much of a burden; she'll just slow you down."
Laurel was left speechless.
Lizzy chewed on her little fingers, giggling at her godmother.
Recalling how she had seen Annie do it, Laurel opened the diaper bag Conner had brought and slowly managed to change Lizzy's diaper.
Once she was finally done, Laurel realized her back was drenched in sweat.
But then she thought, "Lizzy, was I supposed to give you a bath before changing your diaper?"
Lizzy just smiled at her godmother, as if to say, 'Yes, yes!'
With her husband and daughter gone, Annie went up the mountain in the middle of the night to visit her sister.
When Maja heard about the stunt Conner had pulled, she slammed her hand on the table. "I knew I shouldn't have agreed to let you two get married. Annie, divorce Conner before you even have the wedding."
Annie sighed. "Even if I divorce him, everyone in Newtown knows I'm the madam of the Nettleton family."
She then added, "If I really divorced Conner, I'd never win custody of Lizzy against him."
Maja thought about it and agreed. "For Lizzy's sake, you'll just have to put up with it."
Annie was speechless. The love had clearly shifted.
That night, Annie stayed and shared a bed with her sister. "Maja, it's so quiet up here on the mountain."
At night, there wasn't even the sound of insects chirping.
Maja basked in the silence. "It's peaceful, isn't it."
"Aren't you scared of ghosts?"
"No."
Annie opened her eyes, gazing in her sister's direction through the pitch-black darkness.
