Conner Nettleton glared at him. "What, looking for a new boss?"
The penalized subordinate asked, "Boss, does Mr. Cedillo's Silent Ring need anyone?"
"They don't need people, they need punching bags."
"Does Mars Arrowood need more men?"
Conner turned his face away. "With your track record, you're lucky you haven't been thrown in prison."
"Then that just leaves Asher and Teddy."
Conner scoffed. "Go ahead. One lives in a constant hail of bullets, and the other flies all over the world like he's got wings."
After weighing his options, the subordinate sighed. "Boss, I guess sticking with you is best."
Conner retorted, "I don't have a backbone, right? Get the hell out and find a new boss."
The subordinate fell silent.
Later, it was said that Officer Chapman's punishment ended, but the punishment for that group of loose-lipped subordinates had just begun.
Mr. Nettleton held his daughter, watching them endure physical training. "Still want to change bosses?"
The group of men, their shoulder muscles burning and tense, shook their heads. Faces red and veins popping, they grunted out, "Never! Not even if we die!"
Lizzy was a little curious. Why did the men have car tires on their backs while doing push-ups? When one tire wasn't enough, her dad added a wooden plank, and eventually, he sat on it himself.
"Daddy?"
Lizzy's soft call instantly melted Mr. Nettleton's iron-hard heart. "Be a good girl and sit tight."
But to his subordinates, he barked, "Twenty reps. Start."
Lizzy only knew she was sitting on a wooden plank and having a great time, even if the men beneath her looked pretty miserable.
The New Year passed, and everyone gradually returned to work.
