The elderly man gave Henry a thumbs-up, thoroughly charmed by the clever little boy.
Cooper walked over. "Buddy, why did you run off?"
Henry spun around, grinning widely. "Cooper! This grandpa was talking to me."
Cooper looked at the old man, genuinely surprised. How did his nephew manage to strike up a conversation with literally anyone?
More importantly, Cooper actually recognized the man.
"Professor Franck, hello. I'm Cooper Irvin, his uncle."
The older man paused, then nodded. "Ah, Cooper. I've heard your name around the university."
The professor looked back at Henry's bright eyes, seemingly captivated. "Then this must be Andre's son?"
Cooper immediately glanced at his nephew. How on earth did Franck know that?
Meanwhile, Henry was still wrinkling his nose, trying to process the long string of English words.
A few moments later, Cooper bid the professor farewell and scooped his nephew into his arms.
Henry politely waved goodbye. The elderly man smiled and waved back, his gaze lingering until they disappeared from sight.
Back inside the hospital, Kristen was nursing a massive grudge against Cooper, acting as if he had led her to the slaughter.
"Do you know who Henry was just chatting with outside?" Cooper asked.
"Who?"
"Professor Franck. The eccentric senior engineering scholar who loves writing poetry."
Due to his old age and failing health, the professor had taken up residence near the hospital, or so the rumors went. Spending so much time near the threshold of life and death had profoundly elevated his poetry, leading him to publish several acclaimed collections.
