Immediately after the words left her lips, she swung the saber that had been resting against the ground and brought it down on Rheys.
He didn’t move. The blade cut deep into his shoulder, slicing clean through the flesh. He turned his head toward it, golden eyes filling with tears. “Liar. You’re a liar. You said I was cute. You said you didn’t hate me.”
Sylvara’s smile gleamed like moonlight over a blade. “You are cute. But you’re still a Swarmborn, and you can’t be trusted. We’re not on the same side. Sorry, baby.”
Before he could answer, she lifted the saber and slashed upward in one swift, merciless motion. The blade was so sharp it could slice air itself, and it cleanly severed Rheys’s head from his shoulders.
As his head hit the dirt, the red blood pouring from his body thickened and turned dark green. The liquid splattered toward Sylvara in a wide spray.
“Move!” Agares darted forward in a flash, his arm wrapping around her waist as he pulled her backward several feet with effortless strength.
Sylvara had barely found her footing when the severed head on the ground let out a bone-chilling laugh that echoed through the night, high and distorted.
Agares placed her behind him, his voice low and rough. “Calm down.”
Sylvara blinked, then smiled softly behind him.
He makes it easy to love him.
The thought made something flutter in her chest. She tilted her head slightly and said, “I’m not scared. I’m just wondering-his head’s gone, but he’s still laughing. What’s the difference between a Swarmborn crown prince and a regular bug?”
Thank God that face, the one identical to her husband’s, had a patch of skin missing, and the rest drenched in blood.
If that perfect face had been lying in the dirt, grinning and laughing like that, it would’ve been straight out of a nightmare.
Agares’ tone was cold and steady, his words clipped like a soldier’s. “The Swarmborn are a matriarchal species. Their society is ruled by a queen.”
“A queen?” Sylvara stepped forward until she stood beside him, her brows lifting. “So you’re telling me my baby-ugh, Crown Prince Rheys-was actually a woman?”
Oh, for God’s sake.
She’d been hit on by a woman?! She didn’t swing that way.
What kind of cosmic prank was that?
Still, all things considered, not a bad ending.

She didn’t just flirt back.
She cut that female’s head off, too.
Worth it. Absolutely worth it.

Agares turned his head toward Ms. Feywin, his eyes darkening as his tone grew colder. “No. The Swarmborn queen has ruled for 500 years. None of her daughters has survived-only sons.
“To put it simply, their hierarchy mirrors that of bees. Rheys holds the same position among the Swarmborn as a drone does in a hive. Do you understand what I mean?”
Bees?
Bees lived in colonies.
There were three castes in a hive.
The queen.
The drones.
The workers.
In a bee colony, the queen was the only female capable of reproducing.
She was larger than the rest and existed solely to lay eggs, while every other bee obeyed her will.
Drones were fully developed males. Their only purpose was to mate with the queen, and once they did, they died.
Worker bees were countless. They were underdeveloped females, smaller in size, who gathered pollen, made honey, and cared for the larvae and the queen.
So, if the Swarmborn followed the same kind of structure, that meant their queen couldn’t keep her daughters alive and kept producing only males?
“I have another question,” Sylvara said, her mind already running wild. She lifted her hand like an overexcited student.
Agares summoned a dim orb of light in his palm, lowering his lashes. “Go ahead.”
Sylvara pointed toward Rheys. “From what you just said, the Swarmborn’s society is basically the same as a bee colony. If the queen can’t keep her daughters alive, then how do they keep their species going? Does she handle everything herself?”
Good grief.
How massive would that queen have to be?
Would she be giving birth to billions at once?
Agares’s fingers twitched. He had to fight the urge to flick her forehead. How did she even come up with this kind of nonsense? Even with dirt streaked across her face, her expressions shifted faster than he could keep

“Rank,” Agares said, rubbing his fingers together to ease the irritation. His tone stayed calm and matter-of- fact. “Their structure is like a hive’s, but not completely. They’re still evolving.
“Just like how we have mental and physical evolution levels, their evolution works differently. When a queen dies, the higher-ranked males take her place, forcing the lower-ranked workers to reproduce.
“But every generation becomes weaker. The first generation looked and acted almost human. But each one after that became more insect-like, until eventually they lost all reason.”
“It’s probability, huh?” Sylvara said, catching on quickly. “So, the Swarmborn’s breeding pattern is a lot like the Troya Empire’s. Each generation declines-unstable mental energy, broken genes, right?”
“Yes.” Agares, the Empire Light, and everyone’s idol, never shied away from the truth. Whether it came to mistakes or facts, he always owned them. “It’s a probability issue. That’s why they eat Growers.”
