They had walked quickly for about ten minutes when the Hunting Legion’s deputy commanders and Veyric finally caught up.
Veyric ran over, panting hard as he rested a hand on Syara’s shoulder. “You little runt, why do you run so fast? If not for the flames you left behind, we never would have found you.”
Sylvara brushed his hand off her shoulder and lowered er voice to coax him. “I did it for your big goal. I figured if Your Highness fought the Swarmborn crownrince, I could swoop in and steal the credit for you.
“But I didn’t expect Your Highness to be that strong. He already caught the Swarmborn crown prince.”
The moment Veyric heard that his idol had captured the Swarmborn prince, he missed the fact that his breathing had already steadied after she slapped his hand away. “Where? Where is he? Where’s my idol?”
Sylvara pointed ahead. “That way. Go look.”
Before she finished, Veyric darted off.
“Someone actually took down the Swarmborn crown prince. Your Highness even chained him.” Jonathan stared at the message on his optical computer, stunned. I always thought you’d need tens of thousands of lives to catch him.”
Aslan let out a long breath. “No way. Who could even pull that off?”
Jonathan lowered his screen and looked toward the endless mountain range and the dark forest. “No idea. Your Highness is hiding it and won’t tell me who it was.”
Aslan frowned. “Why wouldn’t he tell you? Someone that powerful should be recruited into the Hunting Legion or His Majesty’s royal guard. That would be a huge asset.”
Jonathan paused, his purple eyes deepening. “If he wants to keep it secret, he must have his reasons. We
should wait and watch.”
Aslan’s eyes rolled with interest. “Do you think the one who took down the Swarmborn prince could be Sylvara?”
Jonathan’s purple eyes hardened. “Aslan, didn’t you say she was a useless girl with no mental power? Did I remember wrong?”
The death-like stare made Aslan’s skin crawl. He forced laugh and changed the subject stiffly. “Did I say that? I don’t remember. Anyway, did Your Highness message you to pick up the Swarmborn prince?”
Jonathan stood tall with his hands behind his back, his posture as sharp as a pine tree. His lips curved slightly as he asked back, “The Swarmborn prince is already caught. Let him stay with Your Highness a bit longer. It will help Your Highness and his young wife bond. Isn’t that wonderful?”
Aslan went silent.
Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful.
Too bad His Highness didn’t know Sylvara was his wife
And Sylvara didn’t seem interested in telling him either

Rheys’s half-closed eyes snapped open. He leaned forward with both arms out, trying to pull Sylvara into a hug.
Sylvara reacted faster than lightning. She grabbed the chain around his neck and yanked it tight, stopping him mid-lunge. “Sweetheart, you’re a little too passionate. I don’t like it. If you weren’t still useful, you’d already be a corpse.”
Rheys’s cracked lips let out a rough sound. His golden pupils narrowed into slits again, dark and wild. “Touch me again. Touch me again.”
Sylvara stood and dusted off her hands. She ignored him entirely, because Veyric shouted for her. “Feywin, come here. Look at this thing. It stinks like poop.”
Sylvara turned. Veyric was poking a bright yellow blob with a stick.
She walked quickly toward him. The familiar smell hit her, and she froze. “Durian?”
Veyric held the sticky fruit up with his stick. “You know what this nasty, poop-smelling thing is?”
How could a durian smell like poop?
Unless someone burned it.
And even then, it was nothing compared to his poop-flavored candy.
Sylvara asked excitedly, “Where did you find it?”
Veyric pointed with the durian-covered stick. “Over there. A big tree. Tons of them fell.”
Sylvara followed his gesture and saw a huge durian tree loaded with fruit, with many ripe ones already split open on the ground.
“Wow.” She walked closer, muttering to herself. “Durian puffs, durian crepes, durian cake, durian custard, durian toast rolls, a full durian feast. My durian feast.”
Behind her, Veyric swallowed hard and hurried after her. “Can people really eat this stuff? It smells like poop.”
“You’re not getting any anyway.” Sylvara reached the tree and checked each fallen durian. Since none were spoiled, she stored them all in her spatial button.
Then she used Smokewillow to pluck every durian off the tree, leaving only the biggest and brightest one outside.
She waved at Veyric. “Kneel on it and try.”
Veyric remembered all the amazing foods she had just listed, foods he’d never even heard of. Without thinking, he knelt on the durian.
He shot up immediately with a yell. “What is this thing? t’s stabbing me to death.”
“Drama queen. Watch me.” Sylvara lifted her combat su slightly and knelt down slowly. The spikes poked
