Agares stayed put, his hand hovering over the white button. Every time the bid went up, he pressed it as well.
But his eyes never left Blake’s hand gripping Sylvara’s waist. Even though it wasn’t moving, it was held tight. He said seriously, “General Kenobia, there’s an old saying from ancient Earth Hesperia-men should keep a respectful distance from women. Ms. Sylvie has grown. Isn’t it a bit inappropriate to hold her like that?”
Sylvara froze.
What’s happening?
Blake was speechless as well.
Is he jealous?
“Oh? If you don’t move, she’s got nowhere to sit.” Blake seized the moment. “Go back to your seat.”
Agares got up, but instead of returning to his own, he sat right next to them.
Sylvara’s seat was empty now.
“Ms. Sylvie, please sit,” Agares said.
Sylvara had no choice. She slid out of Blake’s arms and sat down, tucking the device she’d used to message Agares into her spatial button.
On stage, Phil’s voice rang out. “Three billion one million five hundred thousand, first call! Three billion one million five hundred thousand, second call! Three billion one million five hundred thousand, third call! Sold! That concludes the first half. Ten-minute break. All buyers, have your stellar coins ready. Thank you!”
The lights in the auction hall, painfully bright.
Sylvara started adding it up. She’d spent 300 million on a porn book, Echoes Behind the Silk Screen.
Now she’d dropped three billion one million five hundred thousand on 288 energy crystals.
That meant she’d spent a total of three billion three million fifteen hundred thousand!
Oh, heavens!

Where on Earth am I supposed to get that much money?

No way she could swipe the joint account in front of her bargain-bin husband. She’d be exposed immediately.

Agares took off his sunglasses and glanced sideways at the silently spiraling Sylvara. His tone stayed calm. “Ms. Sylvie, you bought at least two items in the first half. That’s quite a lot of money. Do you have enough? If not, I can lend it to you.”
Borrow money?
Hey, that could work.
Borrowing doesn’t mean I have to pay it back.
Decision made.
Sylvara stopped panicking and went along with it. “Sure. The total is three billion three million fifteen hundred thousand. Thanks, Your Highness. Please pay it for me.”
Blake turned sharply, eyes wide in shock.
Does this actually work?
Has Agares figured everything out and is just waiting to trap us?
Agares’ lips twitched into a smile so fast that Sylvara missed it.
Just then, the auction staff arrived to collect payment.
Agares recited a string of numeric codes. “Combine it with the code for this seat. Pay it together.”
The staff member glanced at Sylvara, checked the codes and totals, and nodded. “Yes, sir.”
Agares pulled up his payment code on his device. The staff member scanned it and collected the money.
For large transactions, the Imperial Bank automatically sent confirmation messages to all joint account holders.
Agares watched Sylvara’s right wrist from the corner of his eye. Her device didn’t move or light
He frowned, tapped confirmation on his own device, and finished the payment.

The staff member bowed. “Thank you, sir.”
Agares raised his hand slightly. “Mind if I sit here?”
He’d spent a fortune without hesitation. He had every right to switch seats. The staff member said, “Of course. I’ll update your seat code.”
With a few taps, Agares was reassigned to the seat on Sylvara’s right.
The staff member soon left.
Having gotten the benefit and still acting sweet, Sylvara beamed at him. “Thank you, Highness.”

Agares looked at her smiling eyes. His gaze was deep and unreadable. “You’re welcome. Just remember to pay me back.”
Sylvara went quiet.
