Blake raised both hands and applauded. “Congrats, youuessed it. That’s almost definitely what he meant. You have to understand, he’s never taken a loss on the battlefield. Tactically speaking, he already saw through you. He just didn’t have proof. You kept denying it, barely holding together that flimsy cover, so he played along, held back his big move, dug a pit, and waited for you to jump in yourself.”
To hell with playing along?
No way.
Sylvara shivered for no reason at all. “Can you stop scaring people like that? You make it sound like he’s about to bury me alive.”
Blake gave a creepy grin and casually picked up a blade of grass, waving it in front of her eyes. “Compared to being buried alive, you should be more worried about getting completely wrecked.”
The dirty joke came out of nowhere.
Straight to highway speed.
Sylvara cursed. “Bastard, don’t get smug. Don’t forget you still have to hand-copy the Troyan Empire Penal Code 10 times. If you don’t finish it, my husband will complain to His Majesty. And His Majesty is a total little-brother fanatic. Who do you think he’ll side with, you or my husband?”
“Damn it!” Blake snapped, nearly jumping in rage. “You heartless, backstabbing kid. What use are you to me? From now on, we’re done. You do your thing, I’ll do mine.”
“Fine, then give me the 20 billion,” Sylvara said. She yanked Smokewillow hard. Bluebeard, the twenty- billion bounty who had already tried to crawl into the bushes, was dragged straight out and slammed at Blake’s feet. Sylvara planted one foot on his face. “Pay u.
”
Blake refused to back down and stomped on Bluebeard neck. “Do I owe you money? Why the hell should I pay you?”
“Oh really? My husband said the money gets to me faster if it goes through you,” Sylvara pressed her foot harder into Bluebeard’s face. “If you don’t pay, I’ll call him back right now.”
Blake patted his chest dramatically. “Wow, I’m terrified. Go ahead and call him back. Let’s see what breaks first, my hand from copying the penal code 10 times, or your waist.”
Sylvara shoved the case into her spatial storage, rolled up her sleeves, and stepped forward. “So you want to fight? Fine. I’m in. Whoever backs out is a coward.”
Blake kicked the twenty billion squarely. “Like I’m scare of you. Come on.”
“Bring it…”
“Both of you, please stop fighting. I’ll give you the 20 billion, okay?”
Sylvara and Blake looked at each other and spoke at the same time. “Someone’s offering us 20 billion?”
“I’ll give you both 20 billion. Could you please let me go” Bluebeard’s weak voice came from below. “Spare my life and I swear I’ll turn over a new leaf and start fresh!”

His face and neck were practically being crushed under their feet. Looking at the two of them, one petite and the other middle-aged, neither of them seemed especially strong. So why were they this terrifying?
Sylvara raised an eyebrow at Blake, then lifted her foot off Bluebeard’s face. She squatted down, yanked off his mask, and raised her voice. “Daddy, this 20 billion has a pretty distinctive look.”
Blake squatted down as well. “Of course. Name fits the man. Bluebeard. Look at that beard, blue enough to be unforgettable.”
Sylvara looked at Bluebeard’s dark skin and blue-tinged beard and nodded. “Definitely distinctive. No wonder he wears a black stocking mask. If he went out without it, that blue beard alone would get him caught in minutes and traded in for 20 billion.”
Blake replied smugly, “See? Now you get why the black stocking mask is standard gear. When have I ever lied to you?”
So black stocking masks were standard equipment for the top five on the interstellar bounty list.
No wonder interstellar-era bandits were so boldly unique.
Sylvara clasped her hands in front of Blake. “Respect. Next time I see someone wearing a black stocking mask, I won’t ask questions. I’ll grab them first. By the way, Daddy, do you really think he has 20 billion?”
