**Chapter 71: That’s All**
Drenvar felt a twitch at the corner of his mouth, an involuntary reaction to the realization that he had miscalculated. Why had he chosen to start with Issac? It was a decision that now felt like a blunder, a misstep he would rather forget. As the Education Chief at the Fifth Military Academy for many years, he had encountered countless freshmen, yet none had the gift of gab quite like Issac.
And what was Issac babbling about? It was all a jumble of nonsense, a torrent of words that seemed to swirl around without purpose. With a firm resolve, Drenvar stepped forward, interrupting the incessant chatter. “Mr. Wright, your advice is indeed commendable. However, I must kindly ask you to take your seat. Next, let’s hear from our esteemed Strategy Department Chief, Shannon Johnston.”
Issac halted abruptly, his excitement palpable as he protested, “Mr. Stone, I’m not finished yet!”
Drenvar maintained a polite smile, though he felt a twinge of irritation. “Yes, you are, Mr. Wright. Ms. Johnston, the stage is yours.”
With that, Shannon rose gracefully, making her way to the center of the room, ready to begin her introduction.
Meanwhile, Issac sulked back to his seat, casting a resentful glare at Drenvar. His eyes darted towards Sylvara and Veyric, who were slouched in their chairs, caps pulled low over their faces, clearly disinterested. The sight stung Drenvar; their boredom was a reflection of his own leadership.
Shannon’s speech unfolded in a standard manner, lasting a tidy fifteen minutes, precise and to the point.
Then came the chiefs from Mecha, Manufacturing, and Healing, each managing to keep their presentations under twenty minutes.
When it was Sylvara’s turn, Drenvar called her name twice, his voice echoing through the auditorium.
She jolted awake, clearly disoriented, and nudged Veyric, whose head was bobbing dangerously close to his chest. “Finally! It’s over. Wake up! We can go to sleep now,” she whispered, a hint of mischief in her tone.
Veyric blinked, a small drool escaping as he stood up. “Oh, thank goodness. Let’s go. I just dreamed you gave me food. It was amazing! Where’d you buy it? We need to get some!”
Their exchange drew the attention of every eye in the room.
It was the first time anyone had witnessed freshmen dozing off during the ceremony.
Miralys and Valia, seated in the crowd, were fuming. They had been roasting under the relentless sun for hours, and here were Sylvara and Veyric, casually snoozing in their cushy chairs.
Drenvar felt the weight of his responsibilities crashing down upon him like a tidal wave. Clearing his throat, he raised his voice to regain control. “Please welcome Agriculture Department Chief, Sylvara Feywin, to deliver her speech!”
Speech?
Sylvara and Veyric froze mid-step, their eyes wide open now, the fog of sleep dissipating quickly.
They exchanged an awkward glance, a silent acknowledgment of their blunder.
Then, as they always did, they embraced the moment.
Drenvar nodded affirmatively. “Yes. That creature was a mutated predator. You injured and captured it, saving lives and preventing significant property damage. The academy wishes to honor your bravery.”
With a nervous shuffle, Veyric approached the microphone. “Oh… okay. I’ll say something.”
He hadn’t prepared a single word, standing there momentarily blank, before mimicking Sylvara’s brevity. “Hi, I’m Veyric Storm. Wishing you all the best. Thank you.”
Short, sweet, and done.
He walked back to his seat, his legs trembling slightly beneath him, and sat down.
The senior chiefs were now intrigued, their interest piqued. The freshmen chiefs, however, were seething with frustration. These two had effortlessly stolen the spotlight with their remarkably concise speeches, and everyone was taking note.
Even the upperclassmen in the crowd began to whisper among themselves, their curiosity ignited.
Among them, Zephyrion observed Sylvara from the second-year section, a look of surprise crossing his face.
He hadn’t even realized she was the Agriculture Chief.
She had done nothing of substance, simply stood there, as lazy as ever, yet somehow managed to capture the attention of the entire room.
