BEATRICE
The looks Beatrice was getting told her a line may have been crossed. Did she care? Not particularly. It wasn’t like she’d gone and punched their fares in, which was what she really wanted to do.
“You would earn his respect,” Briarwood replied through gritted teeth. “Goddess knows you’d never be able to get it otherwise.”
Was that supposed to be an insult? Because it was weak. “Funny. I thought the same thing about you”
Another lengthy silence. Yeah, she’d gone too far. Too late to take it back now.
“It’s no wonder your father abandoned you at such a young age,” Elder Blazethorn scoffed.
Beatrice stared at Blazethorn, as if she couldn’t believe someone would stoop so low as to blame a child for a parent’s decision to leave “Excuse me?”
“That was uncalled for, Elder Blazethorn,” Moonbow admonished his… colleague? Were they colleagues? Friends? Fuck if Beatrice knew. Or cared.
“Not any more so than the vitriol the human’s been spewing.”
Beatrice made to stand but was stopped before her butt was barely an inch off the chair. Tweedledick had placed his hands on her shoulders and forced her
back down.
Angry, she half turned, looking up at the wolf who had his hands on her and snapped, “Hands off, wolf.” Surprisingly, he removed his hands as if he’d been
burned.
Beatrice was as startled as everyone else when the Beta had done as she’d ordered without hesitation. Taking advantage of the moment, she turned back to face the Elders. “Why my dad left – whether it was because of me or not – is irrelevant. He was the adult, the parent, and made the decision to abandon us. To blame a child for that is despicable.”
Thinking about her dad used to bring up complicated feelings. Anger, sadness, confusion… There was a time Beatrice believed it had been all her fault. Therapy helped – she’d been forced to go after her mom had the first of many mental breakdowns – but it didn’t stop her from wondering why. To this day she still had no real answers and had long accepted that would always be the case.
And yet these fuckers decided to dredge up the past? Fuck. Them. All.
Her dad… Fuck him too. Fuck him for leaving, for abandoning her to deal with her mom alone. For being so uncaring and horrible and…
Beatrice frowned. No, that wasn’t right. He’d been a decent dad, before he’d up and vanished. She had fond memories of the man. Laughter, smiles, cuddles. there’d been lots of love between the two of them. It’s why his sudden departure had been so difficult. Her dad…
If anything, Beatrice blamed her mom and her mom blamed her; there were no winners.
“I think we have heard more than enough to make a decision on the matter,” Wulfastra commented. “Shall we take a vote?”
The other Elders all nodded in agreement while Beatrice wondered what they were voting on. To force her into sealing the mate bond? Because that’d be
funny, in a bad way. They couldn’t actually force her to mark Hendricks. At least, not as far as she knew. Would they pry her mouth open and clamp it down on him?

Chapter 141
PPP
Elder Bluemoon did so. What were they voting all there in favour?” Briarwood asked, glancing left and right to see who raised their hands. Only one ru, anyway? What was Bluemoor in favour of? “All those opposed?” The other six Elders raised a hand. “Seems we have come to a decision.”
Seven pairs of eyes turned to Beatried and she wanted to squirm under such scrutinizing gazes. What had they decided to do? Something told her this wasn’t going to be good.
“Let those present bear witness to our ruling. Beatrice Elaine Conrad, it’s been decided that your mate bond will be severed.”
Wait. What? Beatrice couldn’t believe it. They’d actually… they’d listened? Or, she’d pissed them off enough to conclude that ignoring the whole Moon Goddess gift nonsense was more important than tradition. Sweet!
“At midnight, you will be executed for refusing the Moon Goddess‘ gift that is your fated mate.”
Hold up. What the actual fuck. They were going to kill her?
Unable to help it, Beatrice laughed. This couldn’t be real. This was insane. Did they really think they could just decide whether she lived or died?
