Take Me Once, I’ll Bleed You Twice
Chapter 30
RIAGHAIRE
56
It had been decades since Riaghaire had found meaning in anything. Locked in an eight by eight box, starved, with nothing to do to pass the time… it was a miracle he was still sane.
Every so often, a prisoner would join him down in the dungeon but it was always a wolf, and they would either taunt him or ignored his
existence entirely. In return, he pretended they didn’t exist no matter their reaction. Wolves weren’t worth the effort. All they were worth
was as something to kill.
It was this obsession of his that kept him from breaking, from giving in to the insanity that the constant, uncontrollable hunger brought It was also how he learned to control said hunger over the decades, to better utilize the meager amount of blood he was given each day
enough to keep him on the verge of insanity and not a drop more.
At first, being locked up had been torture. He’d fought against his failure, at allowing the beasts he’d hunted to get the better of him. As more time passed and the hunger became like an old enemy, he found an odd sort of calm in his existence.
It had come as quite a shock when those two wolves had brought a human woman down to the dungeon, locking her in the cell across his own. Never had a human been imprisoned down there, at least not since Riaghaire’s arrival.
Her scent was intoxicating, making his mouth water, but beneath it he could smell her fear and anxiety. She had spoken with such blatant disregard for the circumstance she found herself in, almost taunting the wolves without a care to her wellbeing. Did that make her brave
or stupid?
or, perhaps, he secretly hoped she wouldn’t know what he was, and would talk to him as one His curiosity had gotten the better of him living creature to another might – and he spoke for the first time in… he wasn’t sure how long it’d been since he’d last used his voice.
The woman, Beatrice, had no issue conversing with him. She allowed him to ask his questions and didn’t hesitate in asking her own in return. Riaghaire could still smell the anxiety coming from her but it didn’t take long for her fear to disappear She was even able to pull a laugh from him, surprising as that was, by saying the strangest things in response to her predicament.
When she’d found out what he was, she still hadn’t turned away, nor had she lie about how being scared. What a strange human
He couldn’t help but become even more curious about this woman, who chose to ignore her fears in favour of speaking with his home was she able to so easily to come to terms with the existence of wolves and vampires? Not only that, she was hunting for more things that might exist and grew excited whenever he confirmed they did
Had humanity changed so much since he’d been imprisoned? Were they now more welcoming to all those different than themselves?
so someone avonding his gaze He’d stared at Beatrice and she’d acted unbothered, though it was obvious she had difficulty meeting his gaze. No surprise, as vampires could mesmer others using only their eyes not that he had enough strength to do anything of the sort was nothing new.

Unlike humans, vampires had fantastic night vision. To Riaghaire, it might as well have been midday. He could make out her brown hair – tied back into a horsetail – and how it was beginning to come undone. Her clothes were disheveled but not improper. She wore a purple, long sleeved shirt with a scooped neckline and dark pants. The style wasn’t one he knew but fashion was always changing and he’d tubely paid much attention to it other than to blend in.
