Chapter 85
They let out a sigh. “Why all things requite a name… I will never comprehend. You may refer to me as… Gaml.”
“Nice to meet you, Gam?,” Beatrice told them with a rod. “Thanks for giving Riaghaire and I jobs, and… stopping the wolves from taking me.”
Gaml shook their head. “That was not for your benefit. They transgressed and were thusly dealt with. Had they been here for some other patron, the response would not have varied.”
“And?,” she countered. “It doesn’t change the fact it’s because of you that they left. Even if it wasn’t your intent, I still benefitted from it. I’m not going to sit here and be ungrateful about it.”
They bet out another loud laugh. “You are indeed an interesting human, Beatrice Elaine Conrad.”
Beatrice frowned. How did they know her full name? She glanced over at Claire, who was pointedly looking away, and wondered if her friend had said
something.

BEATRICE
“Now that we have finished with the nonsense of names, shall I continue, or have you more questions?”
Beatrice shook her head, feeling like she was being scolded interrupting, only they were being sickeningly polite about it.
“As the wolves came for you,” they looked pointedly at Beatrice as they spoke, “and named you a Fated Mate, there are certain things you wish to know, correct?”
“Mainly how to break the bond,” she replied, getting a little excited at the fact someone was showing interest in discussing the subject. Maybe she’d finall get some answers. “The Alpha who lives here in the city said it can be broken unless both sides agree to it.”
“Yes…” Gaml nodded slowly, “however, it is more complex than that. You must both reject the other and invoke the use of your true names.”
“Well, that’s easy, since we know each other’s names,” Beatrice replied, grinning. “Does that mean I basically just say, ‘I reject you, Hendricks Bluemoon’?”
“That…. is the complicated part. To avoid outright rejection from those who have turned their back on the Moon Goddess’ gift, all wolves have a true name they do not to share with others.”

Beatrice stared at Gaml for a long moment before she suddenly started laughing. “That can’t be right. Alise said… she said that only long lived species switch up their names, because they worry about… Ah fuck, that bitch lied to me, didn’t she.” It had felt like her freedom was right there, almost within reach.
Even if Beatrice had learned mate bonds could be broken, it wouldn’t have mattered; she’d have never known the wolves hid their true name.
“Wait. How did you ban him from the bar without his true name?,” she demanded.
“A true name wasn’t required for that, as I banned all wolves, not just the one. It would require far too many names otherwise, which would be far too time consuming.”
“So I’m basically back to where I’ve been since day one, huh?” She let out a sigh. Feeling drained, Beatrice just wanted to go home, curl up in bed, and pretend the outside world didn’t exist for a few hours. Or forever.
