Tempted By my Evil Lycan Stepbrother novel Chapter 104

Chapter 104: You’re My Girlfriend

Riley’s POV

I froze at his words.

Mateo had been locked in those dungeons for nearly two weeks. I’d been fighting for his release, but Ezra’s answer was always the same-NO. 2

And then things between us had gotten ugly recently with my engagement, Leon and Viola, and this thing about Mateo had just sat there, rotting in the silence between us.

Until he brought it up now.

I searched his face. “You’re serious? If it’s a joke, it’s not funny.”

“Of course.” He let out a scoff. “Though I still believe he’s a traitor who colluded with the rogues. But if setting him free makes things easier for you -”

He shrugged and said the last part like it cost him something.

“- then I’ll make that sacrifice.”

I tightened my hand around nothing.

I turned the offer over in my mind, looking for the catch – because with Ezra, there was always a catch.

Was this really for me?

Or was it a calculated move to get Mateo walking free and under surveillance, a loose thread he could pull whenever he wanted to unravel the truth about Veilwalker? 1

It’s pathetic to think about these things, really. Because we were mates. And I was still sitting here, trying to find his hidden

motives.

But none of it changed the facts. Mateo was in that dungeon because of me. He’d taken the fall to protect my identity as the Veilwalker. I couldn’t leave him there.

“What are you still hesitating about?” he pressed, sounding pissed off. “I thought you wanted this-”

I leaned in and shut him up with a kiss.

He went completely still. Then I heard the sharp intake of his breath.

“What,” he said, barely above a whisper, “was that?”

I pulled back just enough to look him in the eyes. “I thought the kiss was self explanatory”

He stared deeply at me, his eyes gleaming brightly under the moonlight

Then his hands found me in an instant, and he pulled me down into the soft laurel grass, the world tilting as he covered me with his body

I tensed for a second. But then he was kissing me slowly, deliberately, like he was trying to calm me down, and the tension bied

out of me.

“Relax.”

He kissed my neck, successfully earning a moan from me. His hands moved to unbutton my dress

“We are safe now. Nobody can see us ”

The unly person who might see was the Moon Goddess. I thought vaguely as he moved inside of me.

She was probably watching us defile her vigil right now.

But then again — she was the one who’d arranged this mate bond in the first place. If she had complaints, she could take it up

with herself.

After the sex, we lay side by side beneath the laurel tree, looking up at the night sky.

The ancient branches framed a sky full of stars, the full moon hanging fat and silver at the center of it all.

Ezra’s hand found mine in the grass.

“…It feels like it’s been a century since I’ve been to school,” I said, staring up at the moon. 1

“Mm.” He sounded relaxed and lazy. “There’s no reason to go anyway. As if those losers can teach us anything.”

“Your flock of fans probably miss you,” I joked.

He averted his head to look at me and raised an eyebrow. “Did I just smell jealous?”

I shrugged. “Do I have standing to be jealous?”

He paused, then propped himself up on his elbows. Then he took my hand and pressed it flat against his chest, right over his

heartbeat.

“Yes,” he said simply. “You do. Cause you’re my girlfriend.” 1

I held my breathe looking at him. From the sharp lines of his face now softened by moonlight, to his intense gaze that seemed to burn down my world.

This was the first time he admitted that things were serious between us.

I couldn’t help but trembled as a wave of strong emotions hit me. He brought my hands to his lips and gently kissed my fingertips.

“When I said I’d make us both free,” he said quietly, “I really meant it. Just give me some time.”

Something cracked open a little in my chest. I wanted to believe him and was terrified of what it meant if I did.

So instead of answering, I turned my head and kissed him again.

Maybe there’s really a way out of this fucked up mess we were in.

Maybe we could actually figure this out

1

We lay there talking all night And then Ezra left when the sky began to lighten at the edges.

I changed back into the mourning dress and smoothed the black satin down with my palms, watching the night erase itself.

Anyone who looked at me now wouldn’t be able to tell that I’d fucked my stepbrother in front of my dead fance’s grave and spent the whole night with him afterwards

I was stepping back through the garden gate when a guard appeared at my side.

“Lady Riley.” His voice was low “Ezra sent me. He asked me to take you to the prisoner

My breath caught. So Ezra really honored his promise

“Now?” I said.

“Whenever you’re ready.

I straightened. “Let’s go.”

The Lycan’s prison sat at the heart of an underground river.

I followed the guard down through passages that grew colder and darker, the sound of running water rising up to meet us long before I could see it.

He reminded me twice to keep the hood of my cloak up. Soren’s people were everywhere, and we didn’t want the King to know that we were about to release Mateo.

I kept my head down and my steps quiet.

The river opened up around us when we turned the last corner-black water on all sides, the prison cell sitting on a raised islan of stone in the center.

We were almost at the bridge when I heard footsteps.

“Stop.” Ezra’s guy grabbed my arm and yanked me flat against the wall. His voice was tense. “Hood. Now.”

I already had it up.

Four of Soren’s guards rounded the corner. They were laughing about something. One had a cloth thrown over his shoulder.

The cloth was dark with blood.

They stopped when they saw us. The laughter died.
