I stood frozen outside the door, one hand still pressed to the wall.
A million dollars of debt.
But I really didn’t get it. My mother was the Queen of Lycans. She wore silk and jewers and walked through the palace like she belonged there. She sat beside King Soren at banquets, smiled for portraits, and had maids trailing after her every hour of the day.
So how could she still be in debt?
How could a queen still owe anyone anything?
Inside the room, Yilia was still pacing, her voice sharp and ugly.
“You don’t get to back out now, Queen Everly,” she snapped. “You took the money. You promised me.”
My mother didn’t answer right away. I could smell her hesitation with a wall between us.
“I…still have to think of my daughter,” she said eventually, choking slightly. “And after tonight… I have to say that I really don’t think Leon is a good match. This has gone too far. So….you are on your own now.”
Hope jumped in my chest.
Then Yilia exploded.
“My son is the best man on earth!” she screamed. “That stupid girl should be begging to marry him!”
Yilia kept going, and this time her voice turned even meaner, more vicious because she could smell my mother weakening.
“Don’t stand there pretending you suddenly care about Riley,” she hissed. “Where was this motherly concern when you came to me begging for money?”
“Stop it!” my mom said shakily. “I didn’t have a choice-”
“Yeah right, because the great King Soren gives you the title, the palace, and the crown to wear, but not the money to keep up with them.”
I stopped breathing.
Inside the room, I heard my mother make a small sound, almost like a wounded inhale.
Yilia didn’t stop. She kept mocking my mother, as if she were venting her own resentment.
“You paid for your own gowns. Your own jewelry. Every time you wanted to look like a queen, you had to borrow money from somebody else. Pah, how are you any better from the rest of us?” she spat.
I swayed on my spot, felling sick.
How was this possible?
My mom had been feeding the world—including me-a fairy tale story between her and the King. Even I was convinced that she was living the elegant royal life she had chosen, even though the price of abandoning us.
But no. Turns out she couldn’t even afford a gown.
Inside, my mother let out a shaky breath. When she spoke again, her voice was broken.
“Please don’t push me like this,” she sobbed. “This is….so hard for me. I didn’t want it either… what am I going to do?”
I couldn’! listen any longer. So I shoved the door open and stormed forside.
Both women turned sharply,
Yilia’s face twisted the second she saw me, but I didn’t even let her speak. I went straight across the room and shoved her hard in the shoulder.
“Get the fuck away from my mom,” I snapped. “And stop threatening fie with the marriage. It’s over, you hear me?
Yilia staggered back in shock, then straightened up with murder in her eyes.
“You little cunt,” she spat. “Nobody wants you. My son was doing you a favor even looking af your filthy little face. You should be grateful he was willing to marry you at all!”
Anger shot through my body like hot lava. And I decided to stop holding my tempter back.
I raised my hand and slapped her. My palm cracked across her cheek so hard hef head snapped sideways.
The room went deathly silent.
Yilia stared at me in disbelief, one hand flying to her face.
I stared right back at her and gritted, “That was for everything you put us through.”
My mother stood a few feet away, pale and trembling, tears still wet on her face.
I turned to her.
“Mom,” I said, my voice steady. I was trying to be the rock for both of us. “You don’t need her money. I have enough to pay your debt.”
Confusion pushed through the fear in her face. She widened her voice.
“What?” she whispered. “Where would you get that kind of money?”
I hesitated.
Should I tell her now? The second life I had built in secret so I would never have to depend on anyone else.
“Mom, I can explain more later. But the truth is…”
I didn’t get to finish.
Because the next second, pain ripped through my neck.
It was so sudden and sharp that I didn’t even understand what had happened at first. My body jerked. The world tilted violently. I staggered forward, one hand flying to the side of my neck.
Then I saw Leon standing behind me.
He must have come into the room through the window or a secret door or something, because I hadn’t heard a thing.
And in his hand was a syringe. The needle had already been pulled free. I could still feel the burn of whatever he had shoved into me spreading through my blood.
Judging by my reaction, it must be wolfsbane.
My knees buckled.
The room blurred at once.
“You stupid bitch,” Yilia hissed, looking down at me with a triumph grin. “You really thought you get to walk away that easily?”
hit the foot hard on one knee, then both hands. My body was going numb from the inside out.
I struggled to look up and reached toward my mother.
“Mom…”
She was crying again, staring back at me in tears. “Oh Riley.. I’m so sorry…”
“Please,” I whispered. “Help me…Don’t let them…”
I didn’t get to hear her response before passing out.

When I woke up, the first thing I felt was the pain in my wrists.
I opened my eyes slowly.
The room around me was dim, the curtains pulled shut against the light. I was lying on a giant bed, naked. With my fours tied to the bed poles. 1
“Oh you are awake, my dear.”
My heart slammed against my ribs as I looked up slowly.
Leon was standing by the bed side, taking his shirt off. He turned and smiled at me. That smile sent a chill down my spine.
“It’s a bit rush but…tonight’s going to be our wedding night,” he said softly.

There was something wrong in his eyes now, something frantic and sick and dosent forwrish We your gove me the ric
I pulled hard against the ropes and snarled, “Get the hell away from me.”
“I told you it’s our wedding night. And we’re already engaged. You just lie down and enjoy this,” he said in a soft whe
“I said get the fuck away from me!” My voice shook with rage. “You think doing this would changs anything? No, I’m selling you now. Even if you touch me, you will still be that pathetic loser that everybody laughs at in town!”
That did it.
His face twisted like I had cut him open.
The charming nobleman vanished completely in one second.
“You filthy fucking cunt!” he roared and spat at my face. “You think you are so pretty and so elegant and so great? Fuck you. I know you are just a tramp. You and your mother, two fucking tramps! I bet you’ve slept around and what I’m getting now is just a fucking lose hole that has been fucked by a thousand men. So don’t give me that fucking attitude because I won’t have it!”
I stared at him in disbelief, shaking
I knew he was horrible. But I hadn’t imagined that underneath his decent, gentleman mask was this…beast.
“You are crazy,” I said in a shaky voice.
He let out a snort. “Tell you what. If I didn’t need your title, I would never lay a single finger on you. You think I want you? All I wanted was the king’s stepdaughter. So that people would take me more serious when they heard I’m the king’s son-in-law and it’s easier for me to scam the money,”
I was shaking so hard the ropes creaked.
He yanked his boxer off and looked at me with a disgusting grin. “You’re a slut. But at least you’re pretty. So I don’t lose either way.”
A wave of pure revulsion went through me.
When he climbed onto the bed, every muscle in my body tensed. His hand slid up my calf, and every inch of my skin broke out a goosebumps.
I twisted away instinctively, but there was nowhere to go.
The wolfsbane still burned in my blood. As a healer, I knew exactly what that meant. I couldn’t shift. My wolf was trapped under the poison and my body was too weak to fight the way I needed it to.
Leon leaned down over me, breathing hard, muttering filth against my face. “God, you have a perfect body. you know that? Tell me how many men have get a taste of this, huh? Before me, your lawful husband. Because that’s what you royal people do right? You fuck around Well, good for all those dickheads before me..”

I furued my head away in disgust. But he caught my jaw and forced me back.
“Look at me!” he snarled “Look at me when Yeck you. You are mine now. You don’t get to look down on me now!”
I could feel my stomach churning with disgust as he leaned down to kiss me. So I did the only thing I was capable of to fight back
I fucking bit him.
My teeth sank into his flesh and I tried to rip off a chunk.
Leon screamed.
The taste of blood hit my tongue. He jerked back violently, clutching at his neck. “Fuck. Fuck! Fucking bitch!”
He raised his hand and slapped me hard across my face.
He shouted. “Learn to behave or I fucking kill you!”
My cheek burned. My ears rang. But under the pain, something dark and hard had settled inside me.
He was going to regret putting his hands on me. 1
Leon grabbed one of my legs again, panting now, trying to force himself back into control.
“…Filthy cunt,” he breathed heavily and squeezed in between my legs. His voice was shaking with anger and thrill now. “Just wait for me to pound you till you fucking pass out…”
My hands tightened around the rope.
Suddenly I felt it. Something was coming.
The aura.
It hit like a flood crashing through a dam. Violent and furious enough to make the air itself seem to tighten.
My heart slammed against my ribs. I looked at Leon and said, “You’re fucking dead.”
He frowned. “What—”
The window exploded inward.
Glass burst across the room in a storm of shattered light, and a massive black wolf came through it like a the gsd of death.
Ezra.
He hit the floor and lunged in the same motion.
Leon barely had time to scream before Ezra’s wolf jaws closed on him and dragged him straight off the bed.
1
Leon crashed to the floor hard enough to shake the frame. Blood sprayed across the carpet. He tried to shift, but panic and terror had wrecked his control. His wolf barely had the time to stand before Ezra’s wolf tore into him.
Furniture splintered as they crashed into it. A lamp hit the floor and rolled. For a time all I could hear was Leon’s earsplitting screams. And the huge noise of the two of them fighting.
I forced myself upright.
My wrists were still tied, but one of the shattered window shards had landed close. I threw myself sideways, stretched, caught it with numbed fingers, and started sawing at the rope.
My hands were shaking so badly I nearly dropped the glass twice.
