“Dad, why were you on the phone so long?” Egan asked as Kiefer as he appeared in front of them along with a small army of men who were now rushing to get vehicles in place to take them to the aquarium.

“I was talking to my administrative assistant and my lawyer at our company. There was an issue with our supply coming in. Also, I was talking to your granddad again. He’s getting a flight this morning to come meet you.”

“Your father is coming?” Genesis’ voice betrayed her nerves. She only met Lorcan O’Reilly a handful of times, and he was a quiet, huge man with eyes which would make a shark’s gaze seem warm. He was blunt, straightforward and while he’d never been outright rude or mean to her, she always felt he did not approve of her, much in the way his wife never approved of her.

“He is. Mentioned making his offer in person,” he and Tadgh exchanged disgusted glances. “He’s also quite concerned I don’t know how to properly manage a work-life balance,” he rolled his eyes as Tadgh grunted his agreement, “and so is coming to assist with company issues until he feels I can prioritize my family needs and not scare my wife off.”

“What?” Genesis was confused by the comment.

“Actually,” Tadgh answered for Kiefer as Kiefer lifted Egan into his arms to put him into his booster seat in the back of an SUV. “Dad was the only one who has been saying all along if you went to the feds, you must have had good reason because he knew from the day he met you, you weren’t going to be a snitch. He mentioned something about you catching him with a waitress while Mom was at the dinner table when we all went out for dinner once and you said nothing.”

“I didn’t say anything because I hated your mother from the day we met, and it was mutual. Frankly if I was married to her, I’d fuck other people too.” Genesis replied as the car door closed blocking off Egan from hearing her comment.

Kiefer snort laughed as Tadgh shook his head with a hint of a smile on his face. Tadgh continued talking, “Well Dad appreciated your silence. He was the only one who didn’t think you underwent an abortion and there was more to it, and he was the only one who didn’t think you ratted us out. “Which reminds me I need to really learn to trust mine a hell of a lot more,” Kiefer grunted at Tadgh’s words. “I hated those two bitches back then. I should have trusted they were not good and simply not let them in the house.”

“Dad sent them here. It wasn’t like you could refuse.”

“Yes, but he sent them here for me to whip into shape and instead I gave them credit cards and told them to stay the fuck out of my way. They ended up messing up my entire life,” Kiefer gave a regretful sigh. “They’ll pay.”

She didn’t know what to say to his words, but she was saved from replying when Egan smacked his palm on the tinted window in a clear display of displeasure the caravan of vehicles wasn’t moving yet.

“I’ll go with him,” Kiefer motioned to the boy. “Gen, you’re with me. Tadgh and Jerren, separate cars in case we run into trouble. Can’t have all three of us in the same car.”

They nodded their agreement and took off each to their own vehicles. She did not want to be in a car with Kiefer, but she didn’t want to not travel with Egan. If something did go down, she wanted to be where her son was to keep him safe. It brought her to a request she knew Kiefer was going to refuse but she was going to ask anyway.

“I want a weapon.” She asked before they got into the car.
