Chapter 17 What She Really Likes
“What, did you think I didn’t know how to enjoy good food?”
“Pfft.”
Finished
As Isabella said this, she let out another scoffing laugh and spoke to the servant in front of her. “Switch it out.”
At her words, the servant quickly acknowledged and immediately went to get another bowl–this time pumpkin oatmeal–asking, “Ms. Powell, is pumpkin oatmeal okay?”
“Yeah.”
Isabella didn’t even look up, too lazy to bother with the unpleasant expressions on Hannah, Daniel, and Isaac’s faces.
Daniel’s hand tightened on the newspaper he was holding.
Meanwhile, Isaac, who had just come downstairs, had overheard what Isabella said, and his face stiffened with displeasure as well.
At first, hearing the exchange between Isabella and Hannah, he’d been furious, thinking Isabella was once again picking on Hannah and making her miserable.
But after listening to everything Isabella had said, his expression turned rigid.
Thinking back, it seemed they really had never asked/Isabella what she liked to eat.
Even the salmon grits…
That salmon grits…
Isaac’s face grew even more uncomfortable.
Because he remembered–that salmon grits seemed to be something Hannah liked.
It was just that when Isabella first came back, Hannah had asked if Isabella ate salmon grits, and Isabella
hadn’t said no.
Ever since then, salmon grits had shown up at almost every meal.
At the time, Isabella’s expression couldn’t exactly be described as one of enjoyment.
Isaac couldn’t quite remember clearly.
The Isabella who had just been brought home was very timid, not even daring to lift her head, speaking in a small, hesitant voice.
Back then, since Isabella didn’t object, they just assumed she liked it.
It seemed… just like Isabella had said, no one had ever really asked her what she liked to eat or actively

prepared anything for her.
Meanwhile, Daniel’s expression was also very uncomfortable.
His thoughts were in a mess.
When Isabella had confronted Hannah earlier, he’d almost snapped at her.
Finished
Every time before, whenever Isabella’s expression or tone toward Hannah was even slightly unpleasant, or even if she was just quiet, he’d felt extremely dissatisfied, thinking Isabella was giving Hannah attitude.
But this time, when Isabella actually gave Hannah attitude, his face instead showed confusion.
He really wasn’t an uncaring father; he had just forgotten….
He’d thought that since Isabella and Hannah were around the same age, and Isabella hadn’t grown up in a wealthy household, she would naturally eat whatever Hannah ate. That way, he wouldn’t look like he was playing favorites between his two daughters, or spoiling one over the other.
But now, after being called out by Isabella for never having cared about what she liked, he felt a rare sense of embarrassment.
Luckily, it was hidden behind his newspaper, out of sight.
He cleared his throat softly and said in a low voice, “From now on, just tell Mary and the others directly what you want to eat.
“If you don’t speak up, how are they supposed to know?”
He stopped there, not continuing.
Because he remembered that when Isabella had first been brought back to the family, she must have been nervous, scared, and anxious.
There was no way she would have felt comfortable making requests to Mary and the others.
They hadn’t asked either, nor had they told Mary and the others to find out what Isabella liked.
Thinking about it, Daniel felt visibly embarrassed again.
୮
Only Hannah was left standing there, completely at a loss.
Normally, when she talked like this, her dad and brother would rush to comfort her.
