Why was it that when she and Isabella both got kicked out of the Powell family, they were treated so differently?

Isabella had the Carters and the Waynes wrapped around her finger, plus Noah watching her back at school.

Meanwhile, Hannah had nothing!

That thought alone made her burn with even more hatred.

On the outside, though, she kept it together-just looked at Mia with those pitiful, wounded- puppy eyes. “Mia, please… let me explain. You’ve got me all wrong.”

When she said that, Mia let out a cold scoff and cut her off with a raised hand. “Oh, come on,” she sneered. “The precious Powell princess, our high-and-mighty Hannah, actually saying something like that? Weren’t you looking down on me not that long ago?

“What, now that you know you’re staying at my place, suddenly you’re all humble?”

Mia’s face was ice.

She and Hannah were way past fixing things. They’d butted heads before-Hannah had tried to explain herself at first, but once the Bexleys came out on the losing end of a few clashes with the Powells, and Mia got warned by her brother not to stir up trouble, Hannah started acting all high and mighty.

Isabella, at most, just ignored her-couldn’t be bothered with her. And since Isabella pretty much treated everyone that way, Mia didn’t take it personally.

Heck, Mia had been worried at first that Isabella might come after her, but when Isabella showed zero interest, she finally relaxed.

Hannah, though? She was fake in the worst way.

She’d even turned most of the class against Mia.

Like it or not, Hannah still carried some weight in their grade-she was the Powell family’s favorite, after all. Even if she wasn’t blood-related, as long as the Powells claimed her, that was all that mattered.

So Mia and her friends had been iced out.

And now Hannah was apologizing?

She wasn’t sorry-she just knew she’d be staying under Mia’s roof and was scared Mia might mess with her. This was all just an act.

Mia smirked, too done to even entertain it.

Yeah, her brother had told her not to give Hannah a hard time.

But Hannah didn’t know that.

Let her sweat it out.

In fact, Mia could use this chance to throw some threats her way-make her squirm a little.

With that thought, Mia shot Hannah a look that was pure mischief and dropped her voice low. “You know, Hannah… once you’re living under our roof, I’ll have plenty of chances to make your life pretty uncomfortable. Right?”

“If you know what’s good for you, you’d better start kissing up to me,” Mia said, her tone icy. “Do it right, and for the sake of the partnership between our families, I might go easy on you.”

She leaned closer, dropping her voice to a spiteful whisper. “Face it-you got cut off from the Powells. You don’t have anyone watching your back anymore, do you?”

In truth, Mia wasn’t completely reckless. She knew Adrian still had Hannah’s side-but Hannah didn’t know that. And that was exactly the point. Mia could push her around all she wanted and let her sweat it out a while.

The words hit Hannah like a physical blow. Her face drained of color, leaving her pale and shaken. Being humiliated by someone like Mia-someone who used to follow her around, echoing every word she said-felt even worse than being disowned.

The thought of having to grovel to her former follower made Hannah’s chest tighten with a sick, burning shame.

Tears welled up and spilled over before she could stop them.

Seeing Hannah cry, Mia flinched back, immediately defensive. “What are you pulling now, Hannah? I didn’t even lay a hand on you! Cut the act-I’m not falling for your drama again!”

Mia was furious. Every single time, Hannah would start something and somehow turn it around so Mia looked like the bully. She always ended up taking the blame. Well, not this time.

Still, Mia held herself back. Pushing too hard risked Hannah pulling another stunt and making it seem like Mia was harassing her. If word got back to her brother, she’d be in deep trouble.

Muttering a curse under her breath, Mia turned and stalked away. She’d deal with Hannah later.

Left alone, Hannah stood trembling, heart heavy with bitterness. As she wiped her tears, her eyes fell on a crumpled test paper tucked partly under Isabella and Noah’s desk. It must have slipped out earlier.

Neither of them was around-they’d stepped out somewhere after class.

On impulse, Hannah moved closer and picked it up. The sheet was filled with Noah’s distinct handwriting-clearly his latest assignment. Her gaze sharpened as she scanned the problems, and a spiteful idea began to form in her mind.

Just then, footsteps sounded from the doorway. Isabella and Noah walked back in.

Noah’s expression turned cold the moment he spotted her near their desks. “What are you doing over there?”
