Chapter 110 I Am Innocent
James’s POV:
On the way back to the city, I didn’t ride a horse.

I found an old wooden cart. I threw Evelyn and her crippled followers onto it, then pulled the cart myself.
Every step felt like my atonement.
Evelyn lay on the cart and let out weak moans from time to time.
In her current state, even a stray dog by the road would turn away from her.
“Alpha…” she called again.
I stopped, but I didn’t turn around.
“Alpha, listen to me,” Her voice was weak and urgent. “Even though… even though they tortured me and cut me down there… they really didn’t force themselves on me. I’m still innocent! I’m still your Luna! You can’t abandon me!”

“I’ll keep you alive. I’ll make sure you’re fed. That’s all. You can rot away in the backyard.”
With that, I pulled the cart forward again.
“No! James! You can’t do this to me! This happened to me because of you! Bastard!”
Her screams and curses followed me from behind.
I ignored them.
Bastard?
Maybe.
I failed Cindy. And I failed Evelyn too, though she brought it on herself.
My whole life has been a complete failure.
I looked up at the sky.
The sky over Southreach was a clear blue, but my life had already fallen into endless night.
When I returned to the military camp, Cindy was waiting for me in the main tent.
She had changed back into her gown. She looked noble and untouchable.
