When James came back, he reeked of alcohol. He didn’t say a word. He walked straight into the study and shut the door.
I sat alone in the dim bedroom, touching the uneven scars on my face. Hatred burned in my chest.
The palace is hosting a victory banquet tonight. Every noble lady in the Royal Court was there. Everyone -except me. I used to dream of being the center of attention, the heroine from the battlefield. Now, I didn’t even get an invitation.
“Luna, Mrs. Priscilla requests your presence.”
A maid’s cold voice came from outside the door. She sounded impatient, like she would rather not be there.
I wrapped my veil tighter and went to the main hall.
Priscilla sat in the throne chair, gripping her cane.
Her face was dark with anger. Beside her sat Hannah, looking at me with open disgust.
“Get on your knees!”
Priscilla shouted so suddenly that I flinched.
“Priscilla, I’m injured,” I tried to argue.
“Injured?” She slammed her wine glass to the floor at my feet. “You had the nerve to bring up injuries? The whole city knows the truth now! You didn’t earn any honor! You chased glory, broke orders, and got thousands killed! And you were dragged off by vampires, like some beast!”
Her finger shook as she pointed at me. “Evelyn, tell me the truth. When you were captured, were you violated by those filthy vampires?”
My heart clenched. She had touched my deepest wound.
“No!” I screamed. “I’ve said it again and again! They tortured me, but they did not do that! I am innocent!”
“Innocent?” Hannah let out a sharp laugh and covered her nose. “Evelyn, we never want to doubt you. You were held there for so long, and you were found without clothes. Who would believe you? People in the Royal Court are already saying the Duskfang Pack brought home a whore.”
“Shut up!” I glared at her. “I’m your Luna! I went to war for the pack!”
“For the pack?” Priscilla laughed in anger. “You did it for yourself! Look at you now! Your face is ruined, your body is broken, and your name is stained! You’ve dragged the pack through the mud! We thought we welcomed a goddess. Instead, we got a walking disaster!”

“You old witch!” I shouted. “When I was powerful, how did you flatter me? You called me a heroine. You said I was a hundred times better than Cindy! Now that I’ve fallen, you turn on me?”
I pointed at the antiques filling the hall. “You’re all nothing but leeches! You fed off Cindy before, and now you want to feed off me? Dream on! Even if I die, I’ll drag all of you down with me!”
