Outside the window, cicadas screamed in the summer heat, but the sound could not pass through the thick stone walls.

My father sat behind a massive rosewood desk. In his hand, he turned a single vampire fang-the one pulled from the Vampire Duke himself.

His temples were grayer than when I left for war. The eyes that once cut like a hawk’s were now clouded, deep, and unreadable.

“Have you confirmed the real reason Franklin withdrew his army?” my father asked. His voice was low and firm, leaving no room for doubt.

“Yes.” I stood straight and handed him a sealed report. “It was caused by a power struggle inside the vampire court. Their emperor is about to enter hibernation. The seven Blood Princes have already turned on one another. Franklin supported the Seventh Prince, Eric… and Eric was killed by Evelyn.” I paused before continuing. “Franklin lost his political leverage. He had no choice but to retreat at once and preserve his forces for what comes next.”

My father opened the report. His eyes stopped on one line for a long time-Evelyn tortured and killed the prince. His brow tightened.

He slammed the report onto the desk. “That idiot nearly dragged our kingdom into endless blood revenge.”

“I’ve already ordered a full blackout,” I said calmly. “To the outside world, Eric died in battle. The vampires are hiding it as well, just to save face. But Franklin hasn’t forgotten.

“That’s fine,” my father said, rubbing his temples. “As long as they don’t strike openly, there’s still room to maneuver. As for Evelyn, her crimes are unforgivable. But she was formally recognized by both the crown. and the council as Luna of Duskfang Pack, and she was promoted as a Valkyrie. If we execute her now, we admit to abusing prisoners of war and humiliating the crown. Let her live. Let her suffer.”

Politics was always filthy.

For the greater good, sometimes you had to swallow something disgusting.

Evelyn’s life meant nothing. The kingdom’s reputation meant everything.

Once the official matters were done, my father’s expression softened a little.

He lifted his wine glass and took a slow sip. Then his gaze sharpened again, thoughtful.

“Adam, Cindy distinguished herself in the Battle of Southreach. The way she entered the city holding portraits of her father and brother, she had Benjamin’s spirit.”

At the mention of Cindy, my heart skipped. I couldn’t stop the faint smile that rose to my lips. “Yes,” I said. “She has courage and strategy. Without her, Southreach would have fallen.”

“She’s a lovely child,” my father said, then sighed. “But it’s a pity. It’s a pity she’s female,” he continued, “and that she was once abandoned by her mate. Silverpeak Pack gave everything to the kingdom. Now she’s the only one left. I can’t allow their bloodline to end.”

A bad feeling crept up my spine. “What do you mean, Father?”

“She’s already 22, and her bond has been broken,” my father said. “By werewolf tradition, she needs a new mate. The Silverpeak Pack bloodline must continue.” His fingers tapped lightly on the desk. Each felt
