The palace was wrapped in cold morning fog. The air smelled damp, with a hint of moss from old stone walls.

I stood alone in a side hall outside Queen Isabella’s private quarters. I wore the silver-and-black formal uniform of the Gamma Guard’s highest commander.

The Goldfang Medal rested cold against my collarbone, rising and falling with my breath.

“This place doesn’t welcome us, Cindy.”

Deep in my mind, Diana paced across the empty mental plains.

A low rumble rolled in her throat. Her silver fur stood on end. The palace’s heavy, fake calm clearly angered her.

“Easy, Diana. This is a war without weapons. Keep your fangs down.”

“I don’t like the smell here.” Diana snorted softly, her silver eyes peering out through mine as she scanned the room. “On the surface, it’s cheap sandalwood. Under that, it’s drowning in a thick, sickly perfume called Lustbound, and beneath all of it, the stench of rotting jealousy.”

She wasn’t wrong. The hall looked plain at first glance.

No opulent decorations. No shining jewels. Just a few old wooden chairs and simple tapestries.

But as a werewolf with sharp senses, I saw through the carefully crafted disguise at once. The wooden chairs were carved from rare aromatic wood imported from the Arctic Icereach, worth a fortune. The dye in the tapestries came from a special deep-blue pigment produced only in the deep-sea abyssal mermaid territories.

This was our queen. The “kind and frugal” Isabella people loved to praise. The queen was said to mend her own clothes.

“Your Grace, please have some coffee.”

A servant with a proud face set a cup down hard on the table. Coffee splashed out. She didn’t even look at me before turning away.

I lifted the cup. Cold.

Cold coffee.

The coffee was murky, and cheap coffee grounds floated on the surface.

“She’s insulting us!” Diana roared, claws tearing deep marks into the ground of my thoughts. “Rip her apart! Teach that beta what respect looks like!”

“This is just a warning,” I said calmly, setting the cup down. A cold smile touched my lips. “It seems Queen Isabella isn’t as welcoming as King Ryken pretends to be.”

I waited. One hour passed. Then two.

By the time I felt I could map every detail of that cold coffee, the inner doors finally opened.

A soft wave of sweet perfume drifted out.

Queen Isabella appeared, surrounded by maids.

She was well cared for. Her skin looked smooth. She appeared barely over 30.

The queen wore a simple cream dress with no jewelry at all.

“Your Majesty,” I said, standing straight. I gave a clean military salute.

She did not return it at once.
