“Cindy,” Viola said during dinner. She was chewing on a roasted leg of lamb, her eyes red. “I want to go back to the academy. There are instructors there. They also have a counseling center. I need some quiet time. I need to calm the wolf spirit inside me.”

“I’m going too,” Skinny added. “I want to hit the training field and push myself until I drop. If I’m exhausted, I won’t have nightmares.”

I looked at their young faces. My heart ached, but I also felt relieved.

“Alright.” I raised my glass. “After this meal, I’ll see you off. When your bodies heal and your minds settle, we’ll drink together again.”

“To staying alive!”

“To staying alive!”

The clink of glasses rang out, bright and clear, chasing away the shadows of bad dreams.

A farewell like this should feel ceremonial-especially when it comes with nearly 2,000 pounds of gold.

Just as we were about to leave, a reward convoy from the palace arrived.

It was a long line of wagons guarded by royal guards. Ten heavy carts rolled in, their wheels groaning against the stone road.

“By decree of King Ryken and the Royal Council,”

Morton appeared again, this time wearing a wide, sincere smile. “Cindy Spencer, for quelling the unrest in Southreach and rendering great service, you are granted the title Duchess Protector of the Realm and awarded 2,000 pounds of gold! Viola Silva, Skinny Walker, and the rest are each awarded 1,000 gold coins!”

2,000 pounds of gold.

When the chests sealed with royal marks were opened, a flood of golden light spilled out and lit up the entire street.

The heavy, pure shine of metal made the surrounding werewolves gasp in awe.

“Oh

“Cindy! I’m rich!” Viola hugged her heavy coin bag. All the gloom vanished as she laughed like a kid with candy. “A thousand coins! I could eat luxury meals at the academy cafeteria for a hundred years!”

“Don’t get carried away.” I laughed and tapped her head, my own mood lifting. “Come on! Since we’re rich now, let’s go shopping! We’ll buy the best things in the kingdom. Everything today-this Duchess is paying!”

“Yeah! Long live Cindy!”

We marched straight to the busiest shopping street near the palace-Silvermoon Avenue.

This place was packed with luxury shops.

Alchemy stores, premium weapon shops, and custom leather armor shops. Everything you could want.

We stormed from shop to shop like wolves let loose.

“Boss! That silver-blended dagger-I’ll take it! One for everyone!”

“These flame salamander-hide inner vests, how many do you have? I want them all!”

“This is the highest-grade calming potion? Buy the whole stock!”

I waved gold around like a reckless spender.

This wasn’t showing off. This was released.
