Chapter 154 Laying Down the Armor, Donning the Gown

Cindy’s POV:

Early the next morning, Jewel dragged me out of bed.

“Ms. Spencer, wake up. The horns of war have sounded,” she shouted, directing two young maids as they carried armfuls of garments into the room.

Gowns of every kind crowded the racks-red like flame, purple like temptation, black like night.

“Too gaudy,” I said after a quick glance, shaking my head. “Princess Margaret loves flaunting her pure bloodline and refined taste. If I show up drenched in loud colors, she’ll just call me a tasteless upstart.”

I walked to the far end of the rack and pulled out a simple, moon-white gown.

It was designed by an upperclassman from the academy. Instead of ordinary silk, it was made from moonweave, a fabric traded by the merfolk along the coast.

Indoors, it looked like a soft, matte white. Under lamplight or moonlight, it gave off a faint silver sheen, like a veil of mist hovered over the body.

“This one.”

Jewel’s eyes lit up. “Excellent choice, Ms. Spencer. It doesn’t steal attention, but it carries that cold, elegant air of ‘I’m above you, and you know it.”

What followed were three hours of pure torment.

A bath, oil massage, exfoliation, body lotion. I felt like a slab of meat getting marinated over and over.

“Bear with it, Ms. Spencer,” Jewel said, patting my face with a powder puff. “You spend all your time out in the sun and wind at the military camp. Your foundation is excellent, but your skin is too dry. Today we’ve to achieve that luminous, hydrated look.”

For makeup, she skipped heavy smoky eyes and chose a cool, restrained style instead.

My brows were left natural, the eyes shaded in muted earth tones to soften them, with only a hint of fine shimmer at the corners. My lips were brushed with a gentle rosewood shade.

Last came my hair.

My silver hair was curled into loose waves that spilled over my shoulders, half-gathered with a moonstone hairpin.

“All done,” Jewel said, stepping back with a soft gasp.

I stood and walked toward the full-length mirror.

The person in the mirror made me pause.

The moonweave gown traced the lines of a body shaped by years of training. Not fragile or thin, but taut and strong.

Defined collarbones, smooth arms, a waist slim enough to grasp, yet coiled with power.

And my eyes most of all.

Framed by the clean makeup, eyes that had seen life and death appeared deep and inscrutable, carrying a pressure that discouraged anyone from meeting their gaze for long.
