Chapter 155 A Common Enemy

Priscilla of Duskfang Pack POV:

Princess Margaret’s Crystal Palace really lived up to its reputation as a temple of excess.

I narrowed my aging, slightly clouded eyes and greedily swept my gaze over the glittering crowd.

The golden light spilling from the massive crystal chandelier overhead dazzled my vision and stirred an itch deep in my chest.

The air was thick with the aroma of expensive liquor, mixed with the unrestrained pheromones of high- ranking werewolves. Sweet, domineering, intoxicating. It was the scent of power. A scent our Duskfang Pack once possessed, and now could only admire from afar.

I glanced down at my own dark brown gown.

This was an old piece I had kept at the bottom of my trunk. The fabric was still heavy and dignified, but surrounded by fashionable new dresses bursting with color and embellishments, my attire looked dated and out of place.

I tightened my grip on the cane until my knuckles turned pale.

“Hannah, straighten your back,” I hissed under my breath, shooting Hannah a sharp look of frustration. “Keep your eyes open. Stop acting like a country bumpkin. Everyone here’s top-tier nobility. If you show some promise and catch the eye of a high-ranking Alpha, our family might still be saved. Do you hear me?”

The useless girl clutched the hem of her dress and muttered timidly, “Grandma, but no one is coming over to speak with us…”

Bitterness welled up inside me, though I forced myself to maintain an air of authority.

As if I didn’t know.

The looks those nobles cast our way were the same looks people gave filth.

Ever since we were pushed out of the royal inner circle, we were probably worth less to them than stray dogs by the roadside.

The suffocating humiliation made me want to crawl into the ground and disappear.

Just then, an arrogant voice drifted over, sweet as music to my ears.

“Well now, if it isn’t Mrs. Priscilla of Duskfang Pack.”

I snapped my head up, my murky old eyes lighting up instantly.

The crowd parted instinctively as Princess Margaret approached, wearing a luxurious violet velvet gown, a champagne flute in hand. She moved like a proud peacock, surrounded by admirers.

She’d spoken to me. Of her own accord.

My heart leapt. All that embarrassment vanished in an instant. I hurriedly tugged James and Hannah forward to bow, nearly folding myself in half. “Greetings, Your Highness. May Your Highness remain forever young, and may the Moon Goddess always watch over you.”

Princess Margaret swept her gaze over us with a look of condescension, a faintly amused smile curling her lips. “It is good that you came. I was worried you might not dare to leave your house, after someone’s pressure. That Cindy, was it?”

At the sound of the name Cindy, my heart jolted. My cloudy eyes darted as understanding dawned.

I had lived for 300 years. How could I miss the meaning behind her words?

This was no casual remark. This was a blade being placed in my hand.

She disliked that wretch as well.

An opportunity. Our only chance for the Duskfang Pack to rise again.

“Oh, Your Highness, please don’t even mention her,” I cried at once, my face contorting into one of pitiful misery, my voice trembling. “That woman, Cindy, is a devil. She didn’t just wipe us out. She destroyed James’s future as well. Her jealousy knows no bounds. She simply cannot stand to see others prosper.”

“Oh? Is that so?” Princess Margaret raised an eyebrow, her voice lifting deliberately so that those nearby could hear. “I was under the impression she was some sort of hero.”

I rejoiced inwardly. Since you’ve built the stage, I’ll sing the whole performance.

“A hero? She’s nothing but a vicious, jealous shrew,” I declared loudly, emboldened by Princess Margaret’s tacit support. “Your Highness, you don’t know. When she was still in our pack, she couldn’t bear children herself, so she forbade James from marking other she-wolves and even abused the servants. Now that she has risen in status, she wants to crush our entire family. A woman like that has a heart black as pitch.”

Princess Margaret shook her head and clicked her tongue with an expression of sympathy. “How pitiful. Young people these days gain a little military credit and lose all sense of proportion. As a woman, isn’t gentleness and bearing children what matters most? A woman who only knows how to fight and kill, and who’s consumed by jealousy. If someone like that entered the royal family, it’d be a disaster,”

I glanced around.
