The night was as thick as ink that wouldn’t wash off, covering the Duskfang Pack that had long ago lost its glory.
The air was filled with the smell of old medicine mixed with a lingering moldy stench.
I carried a basin of bloody water out from the inner room, my hands still shaking slightly.
The main hall was a total mess. Screams, cries, and breaking porcelain were all mixed together like a ridiculous play.
“It’s all that woman! It’s all Cindy!”
Hannah’s voice was so sharp it nearly pierced the roof.
Her hair was a mess. She didn’t look like the noble lady she usually pretended to be. She pointed at James, who had just walked in, and wailed, “James! Look at what she’s done to Grandma! That Cindy, just because she’s about to marry Prince Adam, publicly humiliated us at the banquet! She’s a jinx! A vicious curse!”
James stood at the door, still in his military uniform. His face was full of exhaustion.
I had urgently called him back from the camp outside the city. As soon as he walked in, he was hit by these accusations, and he looked completely dazed.
“Enough!” he growled, his eyebrows knitting into a tight knot. “What exactly happened to Grandma?”
I set the basin aside, my voice hoarse. “High fever, convulsions, and she keeps talking nonsense. Dr. Rupert refused to come, and I had no face left to beg him again. I just invited that old beta doctor from the west of the city. He said it was rage attacking the heart, plus her inner thoughts.”
From the inner room came Priscilla’s broken, hoarse murmurs. “No… no… shouldn’t have… oh no…”
James’s face darkened as he strode into the room.
I followed him and watched him kneel by the bed. He grabbed Priscilla’s hand, which was as thin and dry as a dead branch.
Her cloudy eyes barely opened to a slit, unfocused.
She stared into empty space, terror filling her gaze. “Don’t… don’t kill me… Ben… Benjamin… I didn’t mean to hurt your daughter… Don’t come closer…”
James froze.
Hannah pushed her way in too, still talking non-stop. “See! I told you it was because of Cindy! That woman must have put a curse on Grandma! She’s just jealous of us! She’s just a woman you didn’t want. Why does she get to join the Ryken royals now? Why does she get to look down on us? This is a huge slap in the face to our Duskfang Pack!”

I couldn’t take it anymore.
Slap!
A loud, crisp slap instantly silenced the entire room.
I was the one who did it.
As the second elder, I was usually the most soft-spoken person who just tried to keep the peace.

My hand was still shaking as I looked at Hannah, who was clutching her face in disbelief. I shouted harshly, “Shut up! At a time like this, you’re still spewing filth! Why do you think your grandmother fell ill? Don’t you know in your heart? Princess Margaret abandoned us! Our last support collapsed! And it was because of Cindy, because you personally drove her away!”
“Elder Cohen, you hit me?” Hannah stared at me, her tears pouring out.
“Hitting you is going easy on you.” My chest heaved violently. “If you dare say one more word, I’ll propose kicking you out of the pack.”
Evelyn, who had been watching coldly from the corner, suddenly let out a cold laugh.
O
“Heh, how exciting.” She crossed her arms, her dark gaze sweeping over everyone in the room. “This is the so-called Dustfang Pack? This is werewolf glory? To me, it looks worse than a stray dog’s den by the road.”
James suddenly turned around, his eyes full of complex emotions. “Evelyn, stop talking.”
“What? Do you feel bad for them?” Evelyn stepped closer, the red veins in her eyes clearly visible. “James, looking at Cindy now, how she’s so successful and about to become a princess, do you regret it? Do you regret divorcing that noble Duchess for a woman like me?”
“I don’t,” James argued back automatically, but even he couldn’t hide the weakness in his voice.
“You do!” Evelyn suddenly screamed hysterically. “Ever since the news of the party spread, your soul has been gone! Are you thinking that if you hadn’t married me, you would be the one standing there enjoying the glory? Are you also disgusted by what those vampires did to me…
“Shut up!” Veins bulged on James’s forehead as his pheromones surged violently. That was the rage of an alpha whose bottom line had been crossed. “Evelyn, you’re the one who keeps bringing that up! I never despised you because of that! What we need to face is reality!”
“Reality is that we’ve become the laughingstock of the entire city!” Evelyn grabbed a teacup from the table and smashed it hard onto the floor. “Cindy is a cloud in the sky now, and we’re mud in the dirt! I can’t accept it! I can’t accept it!”
The shouting, the crying, and Priscilla’s groans exploded once again.
