Cindy stood up and walked to the window. She looked down at the bright lights of the capital. “I want them to watch me. I want them to see that I, Cindy, can fly even higher once I’ve left their pile of mud. I want James to regret it every single night when he wakes up. I want that old woman to remember how good I was to her right before she dies, but she’ll never get to taste the medicine I brewed for her again. I want Evelyn to rot in the Duskfang Pack. I want her to hear stories about me and see me covered in glory while she slowly falls apart in jealousy and regret.”
“That’s how you get revenge.”
I looked at her back.
Moonlight poured over her, making her look like an untouchable war goddess.
In that moment, I wasn’t just attracted to her beauty. I was shocked by the connection I felt deep in my soul.
“You’re right.” I walked up behind her. I didn’t touch her; I just stood side by side with her. “Making them suffer while they’re alive is definitely more satisfying than killing them.”
“But,” she suddenly changed the subject. Her tone was a bit lighter. “How did you know I like spicy food? I’ve barely eaten anything spicy in the last three years.”
I turned to her and blinked. “Of course I know. Look at who I am. Besides, I have informants.”
“Informants?”
“Viola.” I said the name. “When I was in the southern border army, I specifically asked her. She said that back when you were at the academy, you added chili to every meal”
“Viola…” She shook her head with a bitter smile. “That big mouth. No wonder.”
The mood became relaxed and romantic again.
“By the way, there’s one more thing.” I turned to face her directly. “The palace and the council are going crazy lately. Our wedding is probably going to make a lot of noble girls in the capital cry into their pillows tonight.”
Cindy raised an eyebrow. “Are they crying because an unwanted woman like me stole their dream man?”
“I won’t let you say that about yourself.”
I reached out and gently tapped her forehead. It was a natural and close gesture. “You are the princess-to- be and the future queen. Unwanted? They were just blind, mistaking gems for pebbles.”
Cindy held her forehead and looked at me. My reflection was in her eyes. In that moment, I saw a light in her eyes. It was confidence, pride, and a little bit of trust in me.

“I know.” She smiled brightly. It was the kind of smile that made it hard to look away. “I know exactly how good I am. You just have good taste. You found a treasure.”
My heart skipped a beat. I really wanted to hug her, but I held back.
“There’s one more serious matter.” I gathered my thoughts. “In a few days, I need to leave the capital.
“Where are you going?”
“To the academy.” I looked into her eyes. “My father wants me to go to the far north personally to see Dean Dross.”
